Well it was a midlevel conventional oxide, roughly equivalent to Scotch 206/207 and Maxell UD-XL/XLI in terms of performance. It's a 1.5 mil tape, so assuming a full length roll on a 10" reel, that's 2400 feet or 66 minutes play time for one pass @ 7 ips. The 1.0 mil version (3600' on a 10") was #407.

Unfortunately, it's also on the list of known Sticky Shed offenders. If it's an Ampex 406, odds are, it will not be usable. When you try and run it it will shed obscene amounts of oxide, squeal like crazy, and bring your deck to a halt.

However, the Quantegy tape of the same model number should work just fine. No Quantegy tapes are known to be Sticky Shed offenders.

Well the best replacement for a 406 would of course be another 406. By Quantegy. If you can find it.

If that doesn't prove successful, then I would recommend ATR Master Tape. It isn't cheap, but it is easily available and probably one of the most versatile tapes I've seen.

Hi. I've got a few of these on metal flanges. I was thinking of throwing the tape out and keeping the flanges. Is that a good idea? I have some other Ampex tape that I got in cases, but I need to wind it first.

If it is AMPEX 406, then it is trash. But if it is Quantegy 406, then its excellent tape. And yes, definitely keep the flanges, if you toss the tape.

FYI - Some other Ampex tapes, specifically 600 series tapes are not known to be sticky as is all of the Ampex 400 series tape.

Currently running an old 406. It's from the late 70's (it came with a bunch of others, and a deck). The deck is a ReVox A77, and music is from the '78-'79 period. it's labelled as "#1" along with "ReVox A77". Other than a touch of grey matter that fell off in the first ~30 seconds, it seems to not be shedding. Somewhere on the net (think it was AK) that some were saying that 406/07 before the mid-80's was not a SSS tape? It also had a number of 20:20+ tapes which (predictably) were total bunk

Hey, if it is working OK & not exhibiting any sigs of SSS or shedding, then its OK to use...myself I have some 3M 996 & some Scotch Classic that Des sold me....both are completely OK with no problems at all!

Cheers
Grant

Update...the tape is not SSS yet. it does seem to be shedding, but only a touch. It did only seem to build a few tiny flakes. So looks like I can recover. I'll end up baking 'em anyways (got a bunch I want to)

I won a BIN for some Quantegy 406. It's a 7" reel. Anyway you guys say its similar to XLI, or is it close to Maxell UD? How does it sound?

The Ampex 406 tape is a good tape and I have used it often in calibration back in the olden days. If it is SSS then Nu Finish it. I got a tape from a person here that was a Scotch Classic- the tape was in good shape and nice box. But it squealed. Processed it with Nu Finish and that tape runs like new. Keep in mind what these new tapes are going to cost you before you use the can.

As to people in Canada not being able to get tape that is sold in the USA, they need to get in touch with me. There is a reason we have a Forum here and it is in most cases here to help each other out. I think it is a form of discrimination that a person on the same continent can buy a tape on the southern part but just because you live in the norther part, they won't sell it to you? Preposterous.

There has to be places in Canada selling tape- I would ask Leon Ament where he gets his tape? Leon is Audiomayvin in case you don't know him.

I did a little research about where to get ATR tape in Canada- this is what I found in the short term-

If you are still interested in Quantegy 406, I have a box of 10 new(NOS) pancakes I can sell you at a very good price. Like Des explained, Quantegy tapes don't have problems and 406 is a very good tape. PM me for more info.
