Perry and my Nak ZX-7

Hello I have been a member since last Sept and have mostly just been in the background. I have asked some basic questions on cassette decks and repairs. I am getting into higher quality decks. I have acquired over the last year some Nakamichi decks and have been doing a lot of reading and some members do very high quality repair work. I chose Perry in Va. because he is closer to me and I see he is very active on the site with advice also. Well I contacted Perry about some work I wanted to have done. I sent off one of my ZX-7 decks that had issues and I wanted to hear what a real fully refurbished deck can do and sound. I received the deck a few weeks ago and I am amazed what Perry did with that deck. I have played some artist tapes and some tapes I have made on this machine and I have never heard better. I wish to give Perry my highest recommendation for his communication. quality of work, and willingness to explain some things that were over my head about technical stuff. Perry I have two others waiting for your magic.

Perry did my Dragon and it never sounded as good as it sounds now. He also did the "Alex" mod.

Thank you all for the kind words. Mike, I will contact you when I have some more room & time to work on your decks. I have Spring Outages coming up, so my time is limited. You waited too long to get your ZX-7 back, and I try not to do that. I just finished Carlos ZX-9, and have a CR-7, Dragon & 581 to work on, plus for some reason my Marantz 2230 is only playing in mono in the family room, and my wife would like me to get that fixed as well. And at some point I want to work on a 1000ZXL I picked up, and that is a rather daunting project..

Let us know how the 700ZXE turns out. I have one that needs an overhaul and hopefully Perry will become an expert on them after working on yours.

If Perry wasn't 3000 miles away from California, I would send him my 670ZX and

and ZX7 for service. I really worry about impact or drop damage shiped via

FEDEX or UPS. Bubble wrap just isn't protective enough for a 20 pound

cassette deck.

FedX and UPS are pretty safe as long as you don't put Fragile on the package. If you do they deliberately kick it around.I have received 2 preamps recently from eBay and they made it to Florida from California in great shape. One was delivered from UPS and the other from FEDx.

I found the same thing. I think the gorillas at the sorting stations are trained with shock treatments to go totally bonkers whenever they see words like "glass", "Fragile", "Handle with Care" etc.

I've had a Dragon survive a trip from TX to MD back to TX and back to MD. BigRed sold me a Dragon, but it had to go back because the LED for the fader gave out which resulted in no input. It was double boxed and he took the extra time to secure in innards of the deck with spacers to prevent damage to the circuit boards. Door was also removed from the deck before shipping as I understand an impact to the door while still on the deck and damage the deck. This was using UPS. Fragile was marked on the box in several places.

Dave
My father used to work for the Post Office and the going joke was if the package had a fragile sticker on it that meant it was packed well enough to not worry about how it was handled.

I'm lucky enough to own a Perry overhauled ZX-7...

It's a phenomenal deck and he's a great guy to deal with.

Spin

Received my deck from Perry yesterday. His most challenging project, I'm sure. What I can say, he's the man! He practically restored and repaired a dormant giant. Amazing performance and the recordings also sound excellent on my TEAC Z 7000 and Z 5000. Wow!

Thanks again Perry.
