I have a problem. I own Revox A77's and B77's. The bias and original setting on the boards have never been adjusted,....do not have the proper equipment. I only use Maxell UD 35-180 with them as I had terrible sticky shed problems with all the other older other brand tapes. Is this Maxell tape giving me the best sound from my standard biased A77 and B77? I also own a bunch of Scotch 203 tapes on 7"reels. Will they sound better (haven't tried then yet)then Maxell low noise high output tapes like the UD 35-180 on the above machines with original settings? I can't be the only one with this Revox problem. Also any comments to my question about the brightly colored NAB extensions for Revox NAB adapters from overseas(biggest seller of these on the Bay, for sure) would be helpful, posted below but with no replies. Where has everyone else bought these things?

Interestingly I have the same ReVox decks you have. A77mkIV and B77. The Maxell UD 35-180 does an admirable job with both. I have a lot of BASF LP35 and LP35LH and it also does decent on the ReVoxes but since they are only 7" reels I usually use my TEAC to record on them since it is set up for these tapes. I can't help you with the ReVox horns as I have no use for them as I don't do any editing that would require them. I also don't really care for the looks of them so I never really researched them. I'm not a blingy kind of guy.

At a pinch, if you compare the source signal to the off-tape one and it sounds pretty much identical with your Maxell tape, then I'd be inclined to leave bias and rec sensitivity well alone, especially since you don't have test gear or tapes to set it back up.

That said, I'm not sure what reference tape Studer ReVox used for alignment but I'd be inclined to think that it would have been very likely BASF stock.

Best tape for Revox

My Revox B77 has been setup for Ampex
456. I am using new RMGI LPR35, SM468 and 911 tapes. Each of these give very acceptable results. I record from FM radio and vinyl, mainly rock and blues.
The only Ampex tape I have, is of unknown origin with SS problems. Maxell tapes work, but the RMGI tapes work even better. Cheers.
