Can tape from a cassette be cleaned?

I have a Tape by The Cure, and the shell is so warped (plus it's dirty) I can't play the tape. The tape on the inside looks ok, and I am going to try to transfer the tape to a new shell, but am wondering if I can clean the tape to keep my player from getting dirty.

wipe the old shell as best you can, transfer the tape into a new shell, load the cassette into a shoebox type recorder were you can actually see a bit of the tape as it passes and give it a look while fast winding. if its of concern, you can get a q-tip in there while winding and see if anything is coming off the tape.
