Inline or Stacked Heads

I just picked up a bunch of old tapes (I think they are from the 50's). Most if not all of them say on the box for Stacked or In-line heads. What are stacked or in-line heads. And do these tapes need a different type of machine then a 4-track stereo tape? Any information would be appreciated.

I will post some pictures later today.

Early stereo decks from about 54 to about 57 had staggered heads. In other words the head for each channel was separate before the technology to build both coils into the same head was matured. So when inline head stereo machines came out they would label the tapes for them so you'd know they would work on the newer machines. After a few years they stopped labeling them as such figuring that everyone had a newer inline machine by then..

I forgot to mention that if you played an inline tape on a staggered deck or vs versa you would get an audible delay between the channels.

Here is an example of a staggered head machine from '54 or '55 that I restored a while back (Magnecordette)

So later machines had inline heads? Are staggered heads the same as stacked heads?

The tapes play just fine on my Technics 1506 which has both 4 track and 2 track playback (all the tapes seem to be two track). In fact they sound amazing. I am listening to Les Baxter Space Escapades as I type this and while the music is not my cup of tea, it sounds incredible, much better than 4 track tapes.

Stacked is just another way of looking at inline heads. The left and right are stacked in the haed. Stacked and inline are the same and if 2 track will be pricey.--

Inline and stacked are the same. Staggered is the older method...

Some of those old 50's 1/2 trk tapes sound great because they weren't reproducing them at 16x speed yet.

OK, I think I got it. Whatever the reason so far I have listened to the following tapes:

Bel Canto Stereophonic Tape Album Number 3 Memories Of Spain & Italy
Mercury Living Presence Adventures In A Perambulator Howard Hanson
Everest Stereo Antill Corroboree Suite From Ballet Eugene Gossens
Everest Stereo Mahler Symphony No. 1 Adrian Boult
Capitol Space Excapade Les Baxter

The Bel Canto and Capitol tapes are basically easy listening which is not my cup of tea. But they are jaw dropping good to listen too.

The others tapes also sound great and are also incredible to listen to, I don't think I have heard anything in my system that sounds as good these tapes. And what is really amazing is that I think they're about 50 years old.
