I would really like to see the whole thing, seems it's not quite right. Can you try setting it up again? Thanks in advance!

Perhaps the problem is the machine that I am using... However, if that is all that was scanned, then I would also very much like to see the rest of the article.

I was able to open the pdf & I am not running anything special for a computer (it also opens with no probem on a xp machine).

And YES the WHOLE page & WHOLE article would be great. All that was there in the pdf was abt 1/4 of a page (I had expected at the very least would have been the whole chart, but that wasn't there). Only showing part of the chart that was all cut off & same goes with the part of the article that was shown, all cut off as well.

Please rescan the WHOLE article & page(s) and post the corrected pdf.

I get a corrupted pdf file error with this link. But the previous link in post #1 is working fine on my home PC, other than being an incomplete scan.

This edition has to be printed and read by all people interested in recording tapes.
This way many questions can be answered without even asking

I see the chart has 203 and 206/207 very close on the top end as I have found out from my own calibrating experiences. Also note how 206 is more sensitive then 203, this I have noted as well. I wish they had done this a tad bit latter and had more tapes from the mid 70's, but of course SSS would be a factor for sure! What was to come was bad news for reel to reel!

I have yet to play around with BASF and calibration gear, note the top end really goes up on LP 35 LH! Also the Maxell UD gets way up there as well. This is why I try to figure out how folks can say they use Scotch 206/207 and Maxell UD on the same deck with no calibration and "everything sounds good".

Ok, I've read the article, learned some useful things regarding tape types and recording level, as well as the original of the infamous "backtreatment" (backcoating?).

The article did get a bit too technical for me about half way through - for example I an not clear which of the tapes in their chart provides best high frequency response.

To cut to the chase.....

....or maybe we should have a guessing ....game?

A little late for that, BUT.....

What deck WAS the GOTO high end Consumer R2R in 1974?

Or maybe the top 5....or ?

But there are some questions.

How much does USABILITY (addjustability) come into the equation?

And then, if 4 track was the common consumer deck, why not use a 4 track?

Hmmmm....

...I need to hit the (old ) books..... ... AND mags!..
