Tascam DA-30 Problem

Hi all, does anyone have any knowledge of tape loading problems on a Tascam DA-30 DAT machine. I've just bought one from that popular auction site. It's cosmetically in good condition but has a loading problem. When a cassette is inserted it tries to load but immediately ejects. I've taken the case off and it seems that the tape is not being taken out to the revolving head. Is this a simple fix or major surgery?
What is the general opinion of this machine? Worth repairing?
Regards
Mike

All the DA 30 I serviced suffered from old dried grease in the tape loading mechanism.

Needs full and painfull dismantling, cleaning and relubing (light).

You also need to clean (deoxit) the sliding potentiometer on the right side of the mecha. It is a kind of encoder to tell the logic about the loading process.

No known issue on the loading tray.

They could use cleaning but they also suffer from stretched belts which are very small. The loading problem can be fixed.

The belt problem is almost only with the DA-30 MkII which has a totally different mecha.

On the DA-30 "1st edition" the little belt which move the guides (4-11 in the service manual) does not stretched, but eventually slips because of the stuck mechanism. Usually the gears "jump" before and you can sometimes hear "clac clacl clac".

Mike: My Tascam DA-30 is suffering the same symptom. I hadn't used it for more than a year, and I intend to bring it in to be serviced by a technician. I was prompted to use it again because I received a mix tape from Pat (Glantoir). I did pop off the cover and watched it while loading a tape. I viewed the on-line tutorial on how to change the loading belt for the DA-30 MK II, thinking the DA-30 was similarly constructed, but it looks like it isn't from what is being discussed, here.

Here are a few videos of the last time I used it:

They are indeed very different.

Beside the loading tray which is the same and the audio board which is similar everything else is different.

The MkII seems very reliable beside the small belt. Never found another issue (once a 7805 voltage regulator that was out).

Hi all, I've now spent quite a while removing some really sticky and hardened grease and re lubricating with some light oil (just so that the mechanism runs without any dragging, it will be lubricated with the appropriate grease later.). The transport now appears to be working ok. The cassette loads, a loop of tape is taken out and wrapped around the rotating head and the head spins up. Problem I now have is the logic buttons for the transport are not working so I can't get it to play/record. FF/RW, PLAY all inoperative. The other buttons under the display as well as the display itself all seem good. Any suggestions? Cheers, Mike

I would check on U701 if the buttons trigger something.

These are like little VCR decks. They often have state sensors and end thread limit switches. Before I go changing any chips which are probably fine and waste money on parts that are not needed, I would go looking for why the keyboard is being ignored. This is probably because the controller does not think the tape is fully threaded yet.
This is more common a problem than a controller IC going bad.

Indeed a defective IC is very unlikeable.

But you have to check first that the buttons are connected to the IC and that the IC sees the button signal.

Mode switches are also to be considered but from my experience of these machines the controller usually tries to eject the tape when something is wrong.

Anyway you can spray some deoxit in the main mode switch which is located on the right side of the mecha (item #17 in the exploded view 4, linear slider).
