Your Latest Tape III

Continued from here.

The old software used on this forum at the moment will start to have a meltdown when a thread gets to over 50 pages and the last one was on page 51 so I thought I'd help out by saying we should all move to a new thread.

Although I've done a few more Top 20 sets since my last post, I haven't tapes any of them yet. I've been busy putting them together. So I don't actually have anything to post yet. This is "Your Latest Tape" not "Your Latest Playlist" after all.

Anyway, new thread, get taping and get posting! __

Last summer l found a small shop somewhere in Athens, Greece with a pretty good stash of all types of TDK and Maxell normals and chromes. The prices were a steal so by investing a small amount of money I grabbed about a 100 of TDK Ds, SuperDs, SAs and Maxell URs and UD II CDs.
Since September I have recorded by various formats (FLAC, Hi-res, vinyls, cds) quite a few tapes. As we speak I listen and record in a TDK SA60 Beck's Odelay.
So, here we go

TDK D60 Dolby B from CD
Buzzcocks, A different kind of tension

TDK D60 Dolby B from 320Kbps download
Side A Unplugged on MTV, Pearl Jam
Side B Unplugged on MTV, Alice in Chains

TDK SA60 Dolby B from vinyl
Side A Kraftwerk, Autobahn
Side B Kraftwerk, Radio-aktivitat

TDK SA60 Dolby B from CD
Deus, In a bar under the sea

TDK SA60 Dolby B from FLAC
Porcupine Tree, Up the downstair

TDK SA60 Dolby B from hi-res 24/192
Steven wilson, The raven that refused to sing

TDK SuperD90 from CD
Side A The Gun Club, The days of wine and roses
Side B Jesus and Mary Chain, Psychocandy

TDK SuperD90 from vinyl
Side A The Cramps, Off the bone
Side B The Last Drive, Underworld Shakedown

TDK SuperD90 from vinyl
Side A The Pixies, Surfer Rosa
Side B The Pixies, Come on pilgrim, The Peel Sessions

TDK MA60 Dolby C from hi-res 24/192-FLAC
Side A David Bowie, Blackstar
Side B David Bowie, David Live

Maxell UD II CD90 from CD-vinyl
Side A Yo la tengo, I can hear the heart beating as one
Side B Louis Tillet, Ego tripping at the gates of hell

You have some great taste in music my friend. For a while, we had a practice space that was in the same building as Yo La Tengo's. It was in a wing of a huge old factory building in Hoboken, NJ and it had been a band space since the late 80's so people were really dug in there. Beautiful big rooms too with both heat and A/C. I slept there many a night and would bump into Ira and the gang out in the hallways. One night I hear some screaming and yelling and I ignored it as I was used to weird noises and people going nuts, but it sounded like it was outside which was strange. I opened the door to the parking lot and didn't hear anything. Since I was kind of sweaty I stayed outside to cool off and I was still smoking at that time so I lit up. All of a sudden I heard a car door open and a man screaming at someone else, really laying into them. As I stood there finishing my cigarette the yelling got more intense and the insults started getting really heavy to the point of crying. I heard the door shut and whoever it was was walking back to the building. Would you believe that it was Ira? I couldn't believe it. I would have never been able to picture a guy that seems so quiet and reserved being able to produce the diatribe that he did. Man, I always hear their music differently. I don't know who he was threatening, but whoever it was must have been horrified cuz he was unhinged. That's my Yo La Tengo story. Wish I had more.

Anybody can be really pissed off, I suppose...
Anything to share with us about the Pixies?
In my teenage years (82-90), when it was quite difficult here in Greece to find some good music we had to rely on fanzines, a few really knowledgable people and mail orders. This kind of music was kind of a revelation. Me and a friend of mine were kind of hunters of what was was then considered as alternative. I still have lots of tapes of this era, playing quite well on my recently acquired Aiwa.
During the '90s things got better and easier so more cd and vinyl went on. Taping in was abandoned as we both finished uni and started working, so we had money to buy stuff. Now we have access almost on everything of that period I am taping systematically and relive those days. I still miss though my girlfriend's red Sony DD2 with Koss headphones. I had a Sony WM-170. Hers sounded better...

Yesterday was experiment day. So I hooked up my Akai CR80DSS to the multi-channel analog inputs of my HT receiver. OK, check, got quadraphonic playback no problem. So what about making some quad tapes?

The deck can record on standard stereo 8 tracks in 4 channel mode, so any blank will do. I have a bunch of lightly used realistic 80mins.

Now how do I get music onto it? Well my Oppo BDP-103 BD/DVD/SACD/CD player has analog outputs. One of the undocumented and recently discovered advantages of this player is it's ability to rip the DSD layer of SACD's. And I have a handful of Audio Fidelity SACD's that contain original quad mixes. These have no center or sub bass channels which are just silent. Since I already made rips when I discovered the hack, I extracted the iso's to dff files and loaded them onto a thumb drive. This comprised "side one". Side two I used audio from Blu Ray audio and reel to reel transfers I had converted to Flac.

The final track list:

Program A:

The Doors - Riders On The Storm (From The best of the Doors SACD)
The Guess Who - No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature (from The Best of the Guess Who SACD)
Bread - Mother Freedom (From The Best of Bread SACD)
Sly and the Family Stone - Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again) (From Sly and the Family Stone Greatest Hits SACD)

Program B:

Pink Floyd - Money (Audio ripped from The Dark Side Of The Moon Immersion Set Blu Ray)
ZZ- Top - La Grange (From a digital transfer of the Tres Hombre Reel to Reel release)
Black Sabbath - Paranoid (From a digital transfer of the Paranoid Reel to Reel release)
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (Audio ripped from Wish You Were Here Immersion set Blu Ray)

I bulk erased the tape and played though and entire program before making the recording. The results were better than I expected.

Umm..so you won't believe this but somehow my phone accidentally recorded the Doris Brendel gig I attended last month. Really weird, that.

And even more odd, I accidentally plugged it into my favourite audio editing software and tweaked the EQ at various points until it sounds decent ish.

That went onto a 90s Bush SF cassette, on which Side A contains the aforementioned Ms. Brendel performing on radio and a recording of a live stream.

It's the only taping I have done recently.

I just finished changing all the belts on my new to me CT-F1000. To test it out I recorded a mix from various Neil Young rips from my Mac AIR through a Schiit Modi DAC onto a NOS TDK SA 90. All is well!

How about the Westwood One Superstar Concerts: Supertramp. No, we didn't tape it off the radio, we have a copy of the records that the radio station played to air. This one is from 1986 and comes with sponsor spots from Coca-Cola (Sprite) and General Mills (rocky road flavoured cereal). Three records but with only one segment of the show per side, at 88 minutes total. It is going on to our one unsealed BASF Coca Cola chrome "High Performance II" cassette. Considering what's in the commercials included, it makes sense to use that tape! Plus, it is Supertramp, so it needs a good cassette anyway.
