Any Nak 550 owners here?

Hi there:

Trying to get my 550 running and I've got tape movement but no meter movement...

Seems like I'm doing something obviously stupid wrong.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

I've got a couple but haven't worked on them yet, though I've repaired a few 250's and 350's which should be the same mechanism.

When you say "no meter movement", do you mean the level meters or the tape counter? If it's the level meters, are you playing a known good tape, trying to record, or?

Are you getting sound output if you play a tape?

What happens if you try to record?

How long has it been sitting since the last time it worked OK?

Looks like some sort of secreted resin. Yeah, but secreted from *what*?

550s suffered from loose connectors. They were gold plated so they did not corrode, but they often would relax their tension.
Another possibility is the head penetration is insufficient to bring the deck out of mute. Try putting a recordable tape in and record the level test tone (button on rear). Tell us the results please.

Actually just got it back from Willy Hermann for a full overhaul. Figured I was forgetting to push a button or something. No output on the headphone jack and the meters don't move.
