Question Technics RS-676US [ISSUE]

I just bought a used Technics RS-676US Cassette deck and Technics EQ. The item was originally being sold for $60 but then found out it does not work properly so I took it for $30 hoping I could try to fix it myself. I would hate to see a neat beautiful piece to be trashed.

The ISSUE I am experiencing is that when I put the cassette in and hit play it engages the tape for a few seconds and then disengages as if the tape has ended. The reels spin allowing the tape within the cassette to move but there is no belt movement. The fast forward and reverse also do not work either.

Another THING I have noticed that I am not sure is an issue or not (because I am new to this hobby) is that the Right VU meter maxes out when I have the Dolby FM switch turned to OUT regardless of what the other settings are on.

Here are the pictures and video I included in the post above if you missed them.
Picture: Technics RS-676US
Video: Technics RS-676US ISSUE
Video: Maybe and issue

I appreciate any help or advice on the issue I can get. I really fancy the design of this cassette deck and would like to use it for my growing collection of cassettes.

Hi and welcome.

The VU and switch issue. I suggest trying to clean all the switches with DeOxit or another contact cleaner

When you FF or RW does the tape counter change/move?

The first video shows that the optical sensor disc does not rotate. Therefore, the belt is most likely to shift. For the second problem, I need to make measurements to give an answer.
This image also shows other issues .Toggle multiple times play -record-play- record.

these old decks have a mechanical play/rec switch with multiple contacts that can get erratic. some contact cleaning on all the switches, including the long play/rec switch on the circuit board usually clears up the weird noise issues.

No, the counter does not move. I'm going to head to a Lowes or Home Depot today and pick up some DeOxit.

Change the red belt . The blue belt is for the counter .For test remove the blue and the disc is likely to spin.Try fingers to rotate the belt pulleys first.

Thank you. I'll check back in here when I get that done. Are there any websites I should know about for getting parts for older cassette decks like this one?

I've never known Lowes or Home Depot to supply Deoxit. You'll likely have to go to a music instrument store, electronic store, or order it online.

I had one of these at one time and had issues getting the counter to work even with new belts something wasn't working right and it was stalling.

I've received my belts and replaced Counter Belt A (the red one), and the lifted the old Counter B belt (the blue one) up and started it up and everything worked fine. Then I replaced the Counter B belt and it seemed to still stall and not want to move again. I feel the new belt is too tight, but I hear over time they stretch, and belts need to be 3-5% smaller compared to your current one. I feel there might be too much tension though?

So, all is working well except for the pulley directly attached to the counter is extremely tight and will not allow free movement of all belts when Counter Belt B is attached. What is a proper way to loosen up this pulley?

Here is a video: https://streamable.com/cna35

Note: you can not remove the pulley.

Take off the counter. Try with WD-40 and warm up the plastic zone in which the axle is being housed. Do not overdo it and keep the inscriptions!

Do you mean remove the counter belt and clean the pulley with WD-40 or physically remove the counter itself and clean up around the axel? I am assuming you mean the latter. Also, I have WD-40 but I also have Kano Aerokroil. I am sure it works the same. It says it can be used on pulley systems.

Disregard my last reply. I've taken the counter off and am cleaning the axel. Still is tight. There is no great way to get a deep clean since everything is connected.

How should I warm up the plastic zone? By twisting the pulley or with something hot like a heated ceramic tip I could hold close to it?

EDIT: It seems to be getting looser the more I play with it as well as some added lubrication. I'll give you an update shortly. Thank you.

Remove the counter from the cassette recorder itself and .....

Edit: With the necessary skills can disassemble everything

Okay. Well, I definitely don't have the skills yet but on the bright side, I have gotten everything moving smoothly or should I say smoother. Here is a video of it moving. I still think it is a tad slow compared to my Emmerson tape deck counter in the other room. What do you think?

Also, at the end of the video, I move on to my next issue, which is my [<<] [>>] buttons. As you can see, the FF & RW does not work. I have my DeoxIT on hand and have used it on all contacts by applying the solution to a q tip and giving it the best rub possible. Is there a better way to clean contacts?

Usually spraying directly into the switch and working it back and forth multiple times. Make sure it doesn't get an anything that might be harmed by it. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Ok, that's what I had thought. I was mainly worried about that method getting other parts wet with the DeoxIT and damaging the Deck. Would I still need to do a cleaning with DeoxIT even though the buttons are engaging the machine? They seem to function properly. The only thing that isn't is the function of FF & RW
