Really, only some perverse deity or weird in-universe rule in a fantasy world could stop that development from occurring.
It's not a question of whether or not the other formats appeared or not. Read the thread title. If open reel was still major etc etc, then _____.

That's all. It's not an exentensial crisis, just an hypothesis.

Besides, open reel actually still is the major format for some

Maybe I lack imagination, but I cannot imagine R2R being the main format well into the 80s or 90s and beyond, unless several other important technological developments never occurred or were significantly delayed.

As I said, that's a great premise for a work of fantasy (e.g. the Fallout games are based on the premise that electronics never got past vacuum tubes, and that all development efforts went to atomic energy instead, in a nostalgic 1950s "retrofuturist" approach), steampunk settings etc.

Then......The engineers came along and said we can make the RTR smaller sound great be usable by every body in the home, car, and industry and we can call it the cassette deck......RTR to cassette thats what it evolved into.

Imagination is indeed hard to come by.

Well, there also were those Victorian-era depictions of the future with people going around in flying bicycles wearing top hats, flying in hot-air balloon platforms or riding literal "steam horses", or 1950s "atomic age" projections that imagined everything in the future powered by small nuclear reactors, even cars

Even Mr. Musk's Hyperloop is in there somewhere
