The Most Godawful, Annoying, Irritating Songs Ever Made

Hearing these makes you want to take a ball peen to whatever component is playing it. I don't think we've had this discussion here on TH.

What are the tracks that drive you into a blind fury rage whenever you hear them? Or at least you believe they can make a glass eye shed tears.

I'll start with what I think are the most abominable recordings ever that really should have been left on the floor of the mixing/editing room.

1. "Don't Let It Get You Down" by Fine Young Cannibals (kind of ironic title considering that the vocal tracks make the proverbial nails-across-a-chalkboard sound seem soothing by comparison)

2. "Warm Leatherette" by The Normal (probably the worst 80's song made and definitely gives the genre a bad name)

3. "Barbie Girl" by Aqua ('nuff said)

4. "Friends In High Places" by Garth Brooks (bad imitation C/W music mixed with a level of narccissism that borders on a clinical disorder)

5. "Mr Bojangles" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (most early 70's Pop music was/is a black eye in the history of music; but even by THOSE standards this song is irritating. As soon as the singer wails out the line "The dog up and died/he up and died/and 20 years later, he was still grieving", this one makes me want to take a machete to the next person that cuts me off in traffic.)

I'll think of more as this unfolds, but these are the top 5 that come to mind.

Just for starters anything by David Head/Talking Byrnes. Just can't stand his voice. period. I was working sound at a venue that they played at (did sound for the house band ahead of them) back before their first LP was released and it scarred me for life. Still have nightmares.
The next worst I can think of is anything by Barely Manenough. An ex girlfriend talked me into taking her to one of his concerts. I was in therapy for a long time after that experience.
I'll add some more later...

No way this thread should have gotten this long w/o listing James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" which is so dreadful it spawned numerous hilarious parodies.

My favorite of those is by an Australian comic that presents the story of a perv on a train scoping out the singer's girlfriend. Couldn't find a link to it but I have one somewhere.

Hard to imagine Blunt as driving a tank in the army before his music career launched but that's apparently the case.

I will confine my patent dislike to ONE song : Lovin You by Minnie Ripperton.

Now I'm sorry that she passed away, that's sad. But her warbling on this song bypasses the ears and drills directly into the head! Very painful.

By the way, she is the mother of Maya Rudolph of SNL fame.

I agree with you 100% on that song but I did like her when she sang with Rotary Connection way back when.

"This Is Not A Love Song" by Public Image Limited.

A couple of months ago I posted on a different forum (same thread topic as this one) my dislike for this song by joking that if it came on I'd wanna kick the speakers in. I got a death threat* for that. Charming. This is one of the reasons why I like tape heads: If I said that here, you'd know I was joking.

If asked of the most annoying songs I used to say "I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene of "Money (That's What I Want)" by The Flying Lizards but after hearing "This Is Not A Love Song" even Yoko Ono sounds brilliant and talented!

*Although they were serious ("And the jail time would be worth it! Nobody better interfere when I'm listening to PIL") I was not concerned for my safety as neither of us knew each other from a bar of soap. But, seriously, I often forget just how "hardcore" some fans of some music can be!

Here's a few that make me hurl:

"In the Year 2525"-Zager and Evans thankfully never heard from ever again after that one.

"Lady In Red"- Chris de Burgh no comment 'cause I don't want to even think about it.

As much as I like Genesis... "I Can't Dance" where did that one come from??

These might get some rebuttles, sorry: "Old Time Rock and Roll" Bob Seger. In fact most stuff by him. Harry Chapin -Cats in the Cradle and most stuff by him. "Mr Roboto" and "Light Up" Styx and most stuff by them. Elvis Presley – In the Ghetto and almost all stuff by him!! Lucky b@stard!!!

I m guilty on this account also.

I'll add Love Shack - B52's, what the hell was the appeal to this song?

Don't Worry Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin
