If both are at the same price I would have the Technics.
I have the 24HX, a great deck, but not the 965. Yet the 965 has several bonuses over 24HX. Reports are that it sounds less good than the 24HX, yet several mods may help it up. Not cheap either.

Ok i love the sound of my DRM-710. The Denon DRM-24HX is more expensive than the technics though. Would the technics blow my DRM-710 away being a newer deck in its stock form?

Many thanks
Greg

Its easy : the Denon ! The Technics is from stock one of the worst sounding decks. It has a lot of 4066 switches and opamps which affecting the sound in a very bad way. Many threads here discussed it.

Hey Lucky love reading your posts learned heaps about dual capstan deck repair and maintenance many thanks for replying. I am leaning towards the Denon now I looked at A.N.T,s writeup about the 965 wow was amazed at how bad it sounded to him in its stock form Alex is a huge asset to the tapeheads community i have alot of respect for his dedication and work he does. High five Alex!!

I buy and selled mine, in one week. Like Aiwas it has much potential if you are willing to tweak it to the max. But in stock condition its far far away from stock Aiwas.
On the same level as Teac V6030/9030S= low budget.

Front reminds me on my Aiwa AD-F880, rec level knob is the same I think.

Anyway if Alex liked it, it must be good!

As I said, I only have (and had) the Denon. It's a nice sounding one, but has limitations.

On the other hand, the B965 should have been the TOTL of Technics and probably the last of its kin ever (until AZ7). Reports are that it sounds awful. Yet it has quartz-DD (vs. belt driven), better choices for calibration than 24HX and dbx.

Maybe B100, M95 and a few others are a better choice than B965.

For 10€ each I would buy both and compare. I would not pay more for any of them.

Ok awesome I definitely canít wait to get the 24-HX now. I learned also the 965 doesnít have a mode motor instead it uses the capstan motor as itís mode motor i was suprised that the technics didnít put a dedicated mode motor in a TOTL deck!!

Just seen this thread, I like Technics stuff, but I would have gone with the Denon. They just sound better.

Obviously, I f it was me I would have gone down the Pioneer route

Either I am very lucky or all you guys have gotten lemons with your 965's.Although I was only able to record one tape from mine using dbx it sounded great. Can't tell it from the source.can't wait to get the playback issue fixed.Even played back the tape on my 905 and same results.I had the 905 sitting across the room with headphones beside it.I could hear every note crystal clear.the AX head did it's job.

Of course you would have gone the pioneer route lol says it in your name but i love the Denon sound nice rich and warm. My dream decks are a Denon DRM-44HX and an Onkyo TA-2800 but they are hard to come by in New Zealand.

Not trying to be smart but since you have a heinz 57 system might as well go with Denon.Technics has never let me down in the past 32 years. It will just leave more 965's out there for true Technics fans like myself.

I bought mine used a few years ago. Never had any issue with it since. It's one of the oldest if not the oldest deck with original belts on.
