Technics RS-B965 issues

I finally got an RS-B965 from ebay but I am having some problems. When the deck arrived it was very dirty. The transport was dirty and there were signs of nicotine.I cleaned it as best I could, as well as the heads, pinchrollers, and capstans. Also demagnetized it.First test recording sounded good on a maxell UR.Next morning it was time to record in dbx with Maxell Xl-11. I noticed after awhile the dbx had turned off.I pushed the button in and out several times and it did'nt do it again. After I finished the tape I was ready to dub it to cd.That is when things went bad. When I would press play it would shut back off. Also does the same with ff and rew. Any thoughts?....I played the tape back on my Technics Rs-B905 and it sounds amazing. At least the record head is in good shape.

Hi we spoke on YouTube, has it stopped chewing up tapes now?

It looks like the typical reel motor gear problem...

Cheers

Is it true that the buttons are sealed and cannot be cleaned but replaced?

Yes

On the switches - these can be treated with a contact cleaning spray, however it is advisable to replace them - more reliable in a long term.

Cheers

You have to remove the transport then remove 4 more smaller screws to remove the plate which the capstan and reel motor are on.

Use Alex's new repair method of using 2x spring washers to repair the gear

Replace all the switches. Cleaning them with spray is only a temp fix. (don't forget the eject button either, as I once did)

And also fully service the mech

I would also advice you to buy a W+F tape, such as the one A.N.T. audio sells. It will tell you if your deck is in good health mechanically

Hi that's great news you found a shop who will take it on

Ask them to check W+F on the deck. If the deck turns out to be a good one, I would highly recommend you upgrade the deck with the ANT4066B chips, plus the other mods discovered by Alex. I can send you a document if you wish which covers most things. I have just stolen info from the main 965 thread to save browsing through every time.

I do not work on other peoples stuff, Sorry, only buy spares & repairs then no pressure or responsibility/liability on me.

Good luck!

Thanks I will get you to send me the doc before I send it off.If I can get the play, rew, and ff to work I think all else is ok.I played back the dbx tape I made on the 965( before it messed up) on my 905. it sounded fantastic.Had the headphones laying beside the deck on the other side of the room.I could still hear every note crystal clear.

I have some dbx recorded tapes i made on my 965 from digital sources (.flac) I did these before I modded my deck a long time ago, I don't think they sound bad with the dbx

However the standard deck without mods is not nice sounding, many, many people on here do not like it

After mods you will not need any noise reduction when recording on chrome or metal tapes!

I haved noticed that.I bought my 905 new in '87.Stereo Review Magazine gave it a rave review. They said it could produce tapes the were virtually the same as the source.I don't know why everyone downs the standard 965.As for me I was happy with how mine recorded. Sounding just as good as my 905 when the dbx encode was working, can't wait to see how it performs with a metal tape.

I believe the problem is the same as with Technics amplifiers, they are only OK for digital sound. But they destroy the nice warm rich sound an analogue source gives.

Have a read of the 965 thread, Alex describes the issue better then I can.

I had a 905 and didn't particularly like that deck TBH, but my friend bought it and uses it to archive vinyl and make mix tapes, he loves it.

If that's your setup, don't hang around, get your deck upgraded ASAP! I think a 965M will compliment that very well!

How do I keep the gear from coming off again? Also do you do mods on decks from members?
