First post, or: The deteriorating Akai M-8 component.

Hello all. Brand new to the forum, so I thought I'd kick it off with an UN-earned request for assistance. I just picked up an Akai M8, and I really dig it. I had been trying to figure out why the deck was slowing to a stop on the lower tape speed, so I popped it open and discovered that a supporting piece of the deck had completely deteriorated. I believe it's also effecting the fast-forward and rewind functions.

I crafted a masterpiece of an informative back-story in the form of a YouTube video, captured with my nearly obsolete iPhone 4...portrait-style...whuut.

Any help would be much appreciated, but I believe I'll just have to track down another deck...

Welcome to the madhouse...

Akai/Roberts used that same mechanism for many years. There was a period of time around when that model was built that they used a substandard pig iron for a cam that moves the levers that move the idlers into position. The cams would crack and fall apart. This cam can be replaced with one from that model or others with that transport. In your video I couldn't see the cam well enough to verify thats its the cause of the fault and the fact it still works at 7.5 ips says that the problem may be elsewhere. Could be a slipping idler or a tape with Stick Shed Syndrome slowing it down.

I am very much unfamiliar with the mechanics of reel to reel decks. I just poked around inside until I found something that didn't look right. That footage was absolute shite, so I appreciate all tolerance. I plan on re-filming the inside and making less of a pain for anyone nice enough to help me out with this.
