Question Ampex 472 score!!

Hey fellow tapeheads out there picked up 3 sealed ampex 472 cassettes for $5 today are they any good can't find much info about them wondering how well they will perform in my Denon DRM-710 are these a true chrome or colbolt type 2? Any tips on using a type 2 cassette would be great mainly used type 1 cassettes.

Many thanks
Greg

Hi, there are very good cobalt type II.
If well calibrated it's the same league as TDK SA / Maxell XLII.
You can find some infos about them by searching "Quantegy 472".

Thumbs up

Oh cool thanks for the quick reply in terms of levels and bias i have always recorded at -1_0db max is that ok don't notice any noise at that level and don't use dolby at all. for bias setting do they bias the same as maxell ur which my deck is set for or do i need to pop the hood and change the internal controls?

Many thanks
Greg

I have some of these and they seem to be the same as Goldstar CRX, just rebranded Ampex. If you'll notice they do say "Made in Korea."

Great tape though. I wish I had more of them.

Reelspin

Yeah i have found that so far they are much better than tdk ar and ad from the 90s jees talk about dropouts. have had no such issues with maxell ur or teac cdx type 1 or these new ampex 472 they are a very clean running tape very little deposits on pinch rollers and heads its a shame tdk dropped the quality of their top cassettes i love the sound of the ar and ad but the dropouts drive me nuts even in a well maintained dual capstan deck. I wish I could get a bulk lot of Ampex 472 and calibrate my deck internally for them. Dreams are free I guess!!

I didn't know they had any of these made in the USA. Could you post some pictures of the shell and j card?

Ah, that's after Ampex became Quantegy. The ones from Korea were still under the original Ampex company.

I wonder how the two compare.

Question

Ah got you the main difference i have noticed between using these cassettes and tdk SA is they don't record as hot without losing highs seem to max out at +1db and level difference is about 2db. is this a case of pilot error or is the calibration requirement different for ampex 472 compared to tdk SA.

Greg, check the "Heads Up" section. I posted a link to a Craigslist add where a guy is selling two boxes of Quantegy 472 C-60 Type II tapes for only $10. That's 20 tapes total, and they are new/sealed. Check it out!
