Tascam tech in the South Florida Area

To those with knowledge,
please I'm looking for a tech that can calibrate my BR-20 in my area, Miami, FL and I'm willing to drive 100 miles if I have to. I want to Calibrate my BR-20 record biased for the SM-911 and LPR-35 tapes.
Thanks,
Angel

I know of only two guys in Florida worth the effort.
One is Chuck Ziska in Ocala who only works on Crowns but he is probably capable.
Then there was Kevin Kaas who is a TV engineer for St. Peterburgs College I think.

Other than that I can not say I have had good reviews from anyone else.

good luck! you are one of 3 tapeheads that i know if in miami. i had to learn to do all my own work based out of necessity and income. i cant think of anyone in the state so skywave's recommendation may be all you have.

i'm not equipped to do what you want to do.

There is a listing for R2R repair on CL in Hollywood, FL, but have no idea of the credentials, etc.

Its a great thing to know, i think it cost me around 400$. Luckily i had someone to answer all my questions. Thanks again Macman.
To start off really get reading that Service manual. And start asking questions, before you even open it up. Youll need a Leader Lmv-185 or simular,, o-scope. Mrl test tape, and a function generator. A few resistors, and patience. Its daunting at first but becomes simple after everything clicks. Each deck is different, although the concept is the same. Getting the same level in then out of the deck. While having the flatest frequency response level. In otherwords a minimum db difference from each frequency usually only up to 20khz or higher on better maschines. Yours maybe up to 30khz. + /- 2 db. Dont quote me on those numbers.

Im just starting my Ampex, and waiting on a manual to do the same.

Good luck.

There is a reason that I get a lot of units from Florida and have some here now. If a service shop was any good at what they do they would be well known by now and like I said there are only a few individuals in Florida that can do the work but some work on other brands and some are retired to TV engineering. There is not a lot of hope for those down there. Fed Ex shipping ground to Chicago, New Jersey is the only way.

Yes, you can tool up and spend $800 -$1200 in tools and scopes and meters and I suggest that people do this but the process to get the deck fixed is going to take longer. You do NOT tool up if you are not wanting to get into the business. Doing so for one or two decks is a waste. I help people all over the world fix their decks- I have E mails from Portugal and Canada as well as Romania and India. I will never see these decks but between us and a lot of E mails and some pictures we do get them fixed.

That shipping cost sound excessive. Did you look at Ground shipping rather than express and also package the deck yourself as it will be a better job.
Also you need to pick a tape as LPR35 will not be the same as the bias for SM911. LPR90 will be closer.

Is it possible to Calibrate the LPR35 for the low speed 7.5 and 911 for the high speed. Is that possible.
Thanks

Only on 2 decks unfortunately. I suppose there might be a medium inbetween. And Sam might be able too. But generally its on one tape maximised for the speed you will use most.

Have you heard of benny amina at modular electronics?

http://aminaaudio.com/

Keep hearing good things about him. If you want to put flux magnetic heads and want modifications done this might be the guy.

I saw great comments by other tapeheads also.

You have to check your credentials of any old shop. I have not had good reviews of the shop in Atlanta and in fact if they were any good why would I be getting units to repair from that area?
I think if you are looking to drive it somewhere, the closest credible person is Nakdoc in Nashville.

Now there are guys that might be capable but they are hobby persons and really not set up for taking units in. Plus most of them have real jobs that preclude any fast work. I am not saying that there are no good Technicians in FL but that they are not working on tape decks commercially.

There was a guy in Jupiter that was said to work on the decks. Then I hear from people that he is refusing to take in the decks they brought him. These business need to make up their mind and either get with it or stay out.
Our good old Ben (Jazzyguy) sent me many units from Florida but he is not with us any longer and I don't know what happened to his collection.
They were some good units he had. CTF1250 was one. He was on Merritt Island.
