Kenwood KRC-999II Cassette Deck

Anyone familiar with this model? I picked a used one up for cheap after shooting the breeze with a shop owner, he told me that this was one of the -- if not THE best cassette car stereo decks ever made.

I haven't installed it yet, and truthfully I don't even know if it works or not, he told me it was serviced a while back by Kenwood, but...ya never know.

Haha, I'll get right on that. Any comments about this deck?

Far from the best car tape deck of all time but it's a contender for the most unnecessary bells and whistles award.

I really liked my Kenwood KRC-960. Was a great sounding head unit (and Kenwood's best at the time it was made/sold) as long as it worked. For some reason it died. I still haven't figured out what failed. Won't power on.

Anyway it looks like a nice deck.

Did you see the crazy prices on the 2 KRC-999 units currently listed on Ebay? Yes they arn't the II version but still.

Totally insane. I wouldn't give you 10% of those prices for that deck.

I have actually installed these, and they were not that special as far as I'm concerned.

It would appear that the fact they were not particularly successful models when new has resulted in survivors being rare and as is usually the case, that makes idiot sellers on eBay assume they are worth a crap-ton, but no.

Heh. Yeah, I did see those. Crazy.

One interesting thing about this deck though is that it has an aux in/out.

The KRC-960 has a CD changer input & with an adapter can turn that into an AUX input. It also has a 4 way changable display color, 3 tone controls, Dolby B & C, Auto tape type sensing.

I have a TOTL Realistic 12-1929 dual shaft auto reverse, Dolby B & CrO2/Metal tape deck (circa 1988) that has a Monitor In/Out Loop on it for adding an EQ or other processor. But could also be used as a AUX in.

There are quite a few car decks with an AUX input. Though some use an 1/8" stereo jack either on a cable or in the face & others use RCA inputs.

But as a last resort you can add an AUX input of sorts to any car stereo with an FM tuner by using an FM Modulator. Though some cheeper FM Modulators only broadcast/modulate in MONO.
