I am totally hooked on film now. I did a lot of test portraits of family members as well using the Kodak Ektar 100 and those turned out far better than I expected. Film is really fantastic on rendering skin tone, it seems. It's WAY more flattering than digital.

And the more I look at the shots taken with the velvia 50, the more I realize how much latent power there is in that film. I've really gotta shoot another roll in some decent light. That film is just spectacular.

From what I can tell from ordering the enhanced scans from NCPS, it seems like the level of resolution from film is extraordinary. And I've only seen 35mm, I can only imagine what you get with medium and large format.

Something interesting happened at some point in the past decade or so...and that's that this phrase started getting repeated: "At this point, digital has far surpassed film." Anyone ever notice that? Companies started using this in marketing materials and then photographers started repeating it, and then other people started repeating it, etc. But from what I can tell, even digital images taken with $50,000 Phase One cameras still have a digital harshness to them that film doesn't have, and they still have a flatness and lack of depth that you can only get with film.

I'm beginning to think that we've all been sold a bill of goods when it comes to digital cameras and so many of us bought into it because of the convenience factors. Digital has not surpassed film in terms of resolution, color rendering, highlights, and depth.

Just stumbled on this thread & recognised many posters.

I don't use film nowadays but my son has just acquired materials & kit for doing just that (see pics). So I may get involved again. He prefers film to digital & b/w to colour. He shoots disused industrial sites. Lots about in NW England.

I was taking reference photos of construction sites through the 80s, 90s & 00s. No great scope for creativity as the emphasis was on factual accuracy but sometimes the shot was specifically required for advertising/literature/PR so got out the Cokin filters.

I was armed with two Canon A1s: one fitted with a 35mm prime lens & loaded with Ektachrome or Fujichrome Velvia & the other with a 24mm prime & Ilford HP4 or FP5. The E6 was always developed to strip & I would review & mount selected shots. The b/w film was stripped & contact printed for selection & 10" x 8" printing. All the developing & printing was carried out by professional studios.

Also in the case was a Yashica twin-lens reflex (Mat 124 IIRC). Occasionally shot some 120 b/w but 25mm was main stay.

I also equipped our field engineers with Yashica T2 or T3 (Carl Zeiss f3.5/2.8 lens) so that they could point & click as need be.

I've been scanning some 120 Ektar at 4800DPI which is something like 120 megapixels per negative. When I zoom in, the pixels become apparent before the film grain.

Digital cameras became "better" than film in the same way CDs became "better" than vinyl. Some measurable quantities may indeed be better on paper, and digital is certainly more convenient. But it is rarely "better" in any serious meaning of the word.

My 80 year old Zeiss-Ikon 520/16 produces utterly sublime images, especially on Ektar. Show me a single DSLR or indeed any digital camera which will be functional in 80 years time...even 25 years time. With film, the R&D from the manufacturers may well have slowed down...but every time they do improve the emulsions, my old cameras get a "sensor upgrade".

Those Praktica B-series cameras were underrated for years, but are now being recognised as capable of producing very high quality images...plus any which were working after 10 years are probably going to keep on going for decades.

My lens of choice for my B-bodies is the Sigma 28-200 f4.0 though I have a nice Prakticar 35-70 which is so sharp you'd have trouble bettering it with any Nikkor. I am also able to use my Tamron Adaptall lenses on the Prakticas, my Nikon F601M and Nikon D50. Conclusion? I prefer the Praktica BX20S.

Ferrania P30 Alpha film.....this is a recreation of a 50s movie film from the resurrected Ferrania factory in Italy. Briefly, they used to be a respected supplier of movie and still film...got bought by 3M because of their reputation and morphed into the world's largest supplier of "private label" films...before dying in 2009. Ferrania are reborn, in much smaller guise, and this B&W film is their first product...as yet only available as a very limited alpha release.

Shot at Mevagissey and Charlestown, Cornwall. Praktica BX20S, Sigma 28-200 lens, yellow filter.

B&W is Efke R100
Colour is Kodak Ektar 100

Pentewan, Mevagissey and Charlestown, Cornwall. The colour film was scratched by the lab which processed it, sadly. But you get an idea of how gorgeous this film can look.

I love that last but one with the yellow coastal cruiser in the harbor with the tide out, it reminds me of a John Hinde classic postcard....

Here is a picture I took of the bus that took me and a couple of mates to Skeggy on a bank holiday in 1978 where we spent the entire day pissed out are heads.

I like that Bull picture. He looks pretty menacing.

It's cooling down here pretty good, just high 90's now. The rapid shift in temperatures is usually just before Halloween, then I can take my film cameras outside again. I might take the ELAN to Visalia this weekend, it should be nice there.
This was my first roll through the Canon ELAN and I didn't realize how fast it could wind to the next frame and shoot again.

Just for fun.....my wife found 4 rolls of Boots Universal film which expired in 2005 in the lost property cupboard where she works. She received clearance to take them....that film is disguised Fuji Superia 400.

So just for sh!ts and giggles I put a roll in my Lomography Konstruktor camera which I built from a kit a few years ago.

Story time!

Last month was the tail end of monsoon season here in Las Vegas. On one of the last nights of scattered lightning, I thought it would be a good night to drive to Red Rock Canyon and practice some night photography with some extended exposure times, somewhere between 15 and 30 seconds. What was interesting about this night was that just behind the mountains were periodic small bursts of lighting going on off in the distance. It was happening so frequently that it lit up virtually every shot, creating a really cool blue effect just over the mountains. Behind me was a half moon that was incredibly bright which also provided some light as well. I was the only person out there, this was around midnight.

Here's one:

28mm, f2.8, infinite focus. Kodak Portra 800.



Now here's where things get interesting. I didn't see anything in the sky at all the entire time. But when I got my pictures back from the lab, I saw this:



Now, this happened during a 20-30 second exposure time. I saw nothing in the sky whatsoever. No one else was there, no drones, nothing. Whatever this object was, it seemed to be traveling "in" from space, just behind the mountain on the right hand side, flew in a bizarre pattern spiraling upwards, then exited back "into" space there on the left. It must've been traveling at an incredible speed because my eyes didn't see it, but my camera did.

Crazy huh?

Looks like a moth or other insect. The strobing is from the wings fluttering. Doesn't go behind the mountain as much as it blend into the edge of the mountain.

It could be an insect, actually. In fact, I now think it is a moth or something. I wonder why this was the only shot it showed up in though. The guys at the lab liked it, they wanted to feature it on their facebook page (NCPS).
