Reelspin Tascam 48 ob -- PROBLEM

Hi everyone. First post. I have a sick Tascam 48 ob 8-track --that just tonight
broke big time. When I push play it kicks out--like something with the tape lifter or brakes, just guessing. It fast forwards and rewinds tape alright
at least the 2 tapes that don't have Sticky Shed Syndrome. The other 30 all
have Sticky Shed. I'm sending it down to Tascam in California in a month
but now I have one more Item to add to the repair list.
Any idea's ?

It does have a slightly bent tension arm on the take up reel side
and I'm missing the Cap for the tension roller on the take up reel side. I
have a screw and washer holding the tension roller on.
I have one new Head - tension arm - and pinch roller from Tascam for it and one relapped Head thanks to JRF and the Tach roller was re-rubbered by TERRY'S RUBBER ROLLERS last year. I'm sure there gonna change a lot of resistors, caps, relays in it. One more problem to ad to the list I guess.
I'm the original owner and I BOUGHT this Tascam 48 back in 1985
and have made a lot of music with it.
The Tascam 48 ob is a great machine.

I'm double boxing it (one is the original Tascam 48 box)
and sending it via UPS. Lotsa bubble wrap the little bean things etc.
It weighs around 100lbs I guess.

Jack

Teac and Tascam has just about closed up shop there in CA. They are now only renting space in a building they sold. Their past history is not good and now they are farming out repairs to across the street and we have had no feedback so far on hat they do or how well they do it.
There are a few guys in CA that I would trust more but I am not sure they work on 1/2" decks. First would be Tinman. There is a supposed Teac past Technician named Adrian- although I never heard of him in my years with Teac I guess it is possible. He is said to be expensive but then Teac was not cheap either. You might want to discuss it with him to see if he can not get you a better deal you want a well seasoned Technician on those machines. Price is a secondary thing. Why? If you have to bring a unit back to Teac two or three times then the added cost of another shop will not be so much.
I was in the shipping department at Teac Chicago when I started to learn about the problem. I called a customer in Arizona or Colorado to tell them they sent the deck to the wrong service center. They responded it was at Teac CA and that they wanted it fix right this time. Chicago and New Jersey were the top two service centers and funny thing is we are still here- at least the Technicians are not the buildings.

Hi Sam: Well do you think you can fix this beast? Do you have the parts or access to them? From my picture you'll notice 5 vu meter bulbs are out plus everything else I've described above. I hope I didn't hurt the capstan motor last night rewinding an Ampex sticky shed tape circa 1985. The 48 won't play a tape now. I haven't sent it yet. UPS deliver's to you to I would imagine.

Yea I contacted Adrian http://adrianproaudio.com/
about 6 months ago about this.
It's like he turned me down because I was
in Oregon and he was shaky about UPS and FedEx
hurting machine's. Thank goodness for guys like you Sam
Terry's Rubber Rollers - Openreel.net - JRF etc.

Hi Jack,
Yes, I am repairing those still and have some parts still. I fixed one that went out of here in April. The customer is a member here. I get Fed Ex and UPS and even Postal here all the time but I would prefer it went Fed Ex Ground.
We should go over all the details of what you need before sending it so that we don't hit any road blocks. You can send to me by direct E mail as my address is always in the signature.
I bet I can get it working well as long as the heads are in good shape. I do have a long backlog.
Lamps are not a problem.
