R2R, Horizontal versus Vertical Transport

Is there any advantage/disadvantage in placing the transport horizontally?

The transport and electronics on my machine can be separated. And I am considering whether to reconfigure the position of the transport.
I sort of like the way horizontal looks to my eyes, but if there are any problems, please let me know.
Thank you.

It's easier to clean the heads when they are facing you. You need horizontal if you're marking and cutting tape. You can load pancakes on a single flange, platter-style if you want.

The way a deck is designed to vent may determine hor-vert setup.

Many vertical machines were designed to minimize the footprint of the unit - especially in home applications. Horizontal or console mounted machines typically were more biased for studio/professional uses (such as aforementioned ease of maintenance and editing) where there were fewer constraints on space.

It depends on how the deck was designed. Some machines have a thrust bearing on the rear of the capstan / flywheel shaft to support it in the horizontal position. Some do not have this bearing and should only be run vertical.
