I think the reason is that the courts in the USA can award a large amount of money to some idiot who injures himself by doing something stupid.

As I understand, this is done to punish the offending company so that they do not repeat the offense ("punitive damages"). The reason is good, but the implementation isn't. What should happen is that the court orders the company to pay for the actual damage (so, pay the doctor's bill etc), but instead of awarding the punitive damages to the plaintiff, order the company to pay a fine of said amount to the government. The company gets punished the same, but the plaintiff does not get to earn money from his actions (he only gets enough to repair the damage).

I also think that there should be fewer warnings for the purposes of natural selection. Do a survey and if 80-90% of respondents consider some action "obviously stupid and dangerous", do not warn about it.

Not so much the courts as gullible juries. The not-so-good citizens of the U.S. pride themselves on their ability to duck jury duty, so one ends up with a bank of retired, unemployed, sick or unclever people who are easily swayed by a lawyer in a $4000 suit.

The reason for these are the lawyers, sue happy public & the idiot judges that DON'T throw these crap cases out on there ear when they come in-front of them. Like the lady that sued McD's because she burned her self with hot coffee. Coffee IS supposed to be HOT.

Next I could see some idiot suing and winning because they got frostbite on the Ice Cappuccino they just ordered.

Im sure the majority or these warning labels, or any warnings, exist because some idiot tried to do exactly what the label is telling you not to do. Overall human intelligence is NOT increasing!! And by the way, does using my Dremmel rotary tool to cut off a ring from my girlfriends finger violate the warning about not using it for medical procedures?

A well-maintained /hosts file is good for that. Just saying.

http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.txt
http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/hosts

If you merge the second one be sure to uncomment all the "google-analytics" entries in the "#<maybe-spy>" section. I don't know why he files them under that heading or even comments them out since they ARE spy hosts. In fact most people would be best served uncommenting that whole section actually as they provide no real public benefit.

Frustrated A very welcomed hint

Not a warning, but rather a friendly hint ...

On one Technics user manuals for turntables, I believe SL-QLy something, it was cautiously mentioned:

These instructions also apply to units of different color.

That reminded me of an old French joke (of course, directed against Belgians)

To add to this

Warning on a radio flyer wagon "Caution this device rolls"
On a Chevy Corvette "Young children must be placed in center of back seat" something it does not have..

Read the details of the case, she was right.
Coffee is hot, by McDonald's kept it lava hot.
This was known at the corporate level and even their
own legal dept said to turn it down a little. They had cases
Of people having lava java dropped on their crotch in the
drive thru, causing 3rd degree burns on their balls. You know,
The teenager hands you that rickety tray and as he hands it, the tray flips
And you are now on the way to the burn ward for grafts.
Coffee isn't supposed to be that hot. All elements of a tort
were present. The initial high amount was punitive because
They knew at a high level that there were a lot of people getting
scorched, but did nothing about it. Are all the customers that had coffee dumped on them also stupid ?
Yes, coffee is hot, but it shouldn't be so hot that it causes third degree burns.
Especially when its handed out of a window where it can fall on you. And, as a coffee lover who roasts his own coffee and makes daily espresso ,I note that high temps destroy flavor.
