ground wires

A few of my pieces have a ground lug on the back. Do they just hook together or to the ground on the 120v receptacle?

thanks all sb

I'd say, be wary of the various ground screws on the backs of various components, if you run them together, you may run into ground loops which can induce hum.

Best to try and isolate any component for ground issues and feed that ground back to a point source, the socket or some such instead of to another component.

my system Kenwood KD12-RB turntable, SHURE M97xE cart, Muffsy PP3 phono pre, Receiver: Sherwood RX4030R, TEAC A4300SX R2R, Denon DCM-370 CD changer, Speakers: sansui SP1700 and in testing/restoration phase, Sansui SP-3000, eMachines PC for multimedia use and recently got a Nakamichi BX100 cassette deck

I always earth the amplifier and nothing else.

As said if you earth other equipment you risk ground loops and hum.

The other equipment is earthed from the amp through the screen of the connecting cables.

Ground lugs are wired with a thick wire type to a central point like a receiver or Mixer. The configuration is suppose to be a Star pattern.

In Radio stations a 4" copper strap material was often run around at the base of wall or behind studio furniture. This ground strap was tied into a pole that went 4-6 feet into the ground. Most consumer set ups do not need a ground cable but in cases where older electrical systems are had the grounds between wall outlets can be a lot and then present this problem.

Some equipment does not care as it uses two wire power that is not connected to the chassis until after the power is converted to DC.
