Just recorded a CD selection of Emerson, Lake & Powell's only release onto the tape via a Sony TC-K61 2-head deck. Using a 2-head deck tells me more about how the tape will perform for Average Joe than one of our higher-end 3 head decks. Results: sound is still very good. Bass is not as deep, and it sounds more like a normal Type-II tape. There's more hiss as a result of the non-optimal 2-head gap, but it's well within tape-listener-tolerance levels. No NR was used, which can certainly account for hiss. One thing to note: this is the kind of tape that not only records well as a Type-II, but plays back well using the Type-II setting. Some tapes sound better recorded as a Type-II but played back as a Type-I. Not so here. Switching to Type-I playback makes it overly bright and the sound takes on a much thinner quality.
My stamp of approval.
