je320, je510, both have the same issue and interchangeable transports. its definitely a transport issue.

Here are links to fix the problems Mindidisc.org http://snnake11.tripod.com/ You are still going to have to rip into that transport to get the stuck disc out. On another note and my experience on mini disc. Be GENTLE on the insertion of the mini disk. If you just jam it in there you will always have issues with the fragile transport of the MD unit.

Looks like a good procedure to follow if that is in fact what the problem is and it could very well be. The reason I have found in many radio station units that pile up is that the lubrication of the mechanism dries up and does not allow the same degree of movement. This can also be an issue as the little motors in these things do not have infinite torque and sooner or later the issue will be there again. I would suggest putting the tape on the post but also to make sure the chassis is well lubricated perhaps with Lubriplate or a like grease. Marc- Tinman has also suggested a resistor added to the motor to keep the motor from breaking plastic parts when the mechanism is having trouble. I don't recall the resistor value so Marc will have to chime in and let us know. I think his addition of this resistor is a good idea and grounded in logic as far as the units I have seen. As can be seen by all the broken down units, these do not have to go to the scrap heap earlier than they need to. I think this one weakness is what was responsible for selling more units as they were called disposable.

While you are in there, solder a 33 ohm resistor between the plus wire and the plus on the loading motor. This little mod will keep the deck from stripping the white loading gear if something sticks. It'll just halt and then spit the disc back out instead of grinding the gears apart. Makes loading real smooth.
This is only for the JE320/510 type mechanisms. The disc in switch is an old hat. I've done hundreds of them. |
