Here's some more of my goodies! Sadly I just sold the HD66's to a guy in California, who got them a week ago, and yesterday, he emails me out of the blue saying the mid & tweeter in one is blown. I'm sitting here going, wtf? Anyone who knows me, knows how particular and strict I am with my speakers. My HD66's were working absolutely perfectly when I put them away. I sent him a note yesterday and haven't heard back yet. I should not have sold them to this knitwit kid. *eyepop* He ruined a rare, beautiful perfectly working pair of Marantz classics. I am anxiously awaiting his response.

I only have one Marantz vintage speaker: it's an RG-150 rated at a 165 watts and has a couple of liquid-cooled drivers. It's actually acting as a temporary speaker stand for my Pioneer HPM-150, right now.

Sweet! Very rare to see them with good foam covers. How about the "Variable Q" foam plug for the port, that is usually rotted away.

I had a pair of HD770's at one time and I actually liked the sound. By no means audiophile but miles ahead of the HPM-100 and L-100. I sold them for decent money but the guy wanted only the drivers as spares for his HD880's. OK, no problem but it was a shame to break them up.

Yep, it is indeed, Sam. My HD66's I had to refoam woofers and Vari-Q's, but the HD77's are literally time capsules from 1976, they still have intact original Vari-Q plugs and even the foams on the woofers is still soft yet firm with no visible signs of deterioration. I can take my finger and poke at it and it does not crumble or crack at all. Still like it was when new. I simply am stumped as to how these survived. The original owner I got them from had them in his closet inside of the original boxes for almost 30 years.

Sunlight and smoke are the two biggest enemies of that foam... so the time in the boxes preserved them.
They look very nice!!

I remember selling those back in the day when I was an audio salesman. They sold well as they are very dynamic and sounded great, especially with the prevalent music of the mid-70s.

The Marantz name attracted the customers and more times than not, the sound of the speakers "sealed the deal". I always enjoyed listening to them as well! The sound is somewhat like what is often characterized as "West Coast Sound", but since I am a JBL fan, that would make sense.

It always appeared to me that some of the drivers were made by CTS, is that the case?

Congratulations on owning these nice little "time capsules"!
