Forgive me, but isn't the ARM-10 the model number of just the REEL itself?

Yes. I've used them many times. With several different types of tape. If you have actually succeeded on recording the actual reel itself (sans tape), then that is definitely a breakthrough in recording technology! Please do tell.

Now smart-ass comment aside, you sure you aren't referring to an actual TDK brand of tape? If so, which one? They had several including SD, AUDUA, AUDUA-LB, LX, GX, and SA.

Of those, the GX is definitely my favorite. I think the factory issue reels for LX/GX/SA are dog ugly. But a one pass fast wind onto any other reel of my choosing fixes that.

Matt,
Good question, remember I am new at this and have no idea about the tape, this is exactly why I'm asking. My father gave this and the box saids AMR-10, and the reel TDK, now the tape has the back coating black. I will find out tomorrow more. The tape has great low extension.

PS, I did tried the ampex 456 and I was impressed.

Matt,
I asked my father and he thinks that he bought the empty reel and then he spool them but can't remember the tape he spool them with. I recorded on and they sound good, not Maxell or Ampex, could be TDK.

I was going to say that if the box simply said "TDK ARM-10" (empty reel), then the tape can be pretty much anything.

One clue would be the leaders. Assuming it has them. If it does, can you describe them? If not, then there is a good chance that the tape is an Ampex or Scotch of some kind, as many of those came leaderless. It's possible (but not likely IMO) that the previous owner of the tape chopped the leaders.

But if you say it performs well, and is an old tape, then that could be a strike against the possibility of any Scotch or Ampex because of known sticky shed issues. So who knows. I wish I could be there to sniff the tape! Every tape has its own distinct aroma and I might be able to tell what it is based on that.

Also what is the length of the tape?
