Ah yes, Radio Shack's last stab at respectability before it went into the toilet. In the late 90's, they had a pretty good line of blank tapes. I bought some of their TOTL high bias cassettes, the SHD (Super High Definition). A very good tape, on par with the Maxell XLII-S & TDK SA-X.

When I got into cassettes again this spring I went to RS to buy several boxes, but they quit making them. They lost an easy sale; I probably would have spent at least $50!

The Type IV in the opening post is almost certainly a clone of 1990 TDK MA-X, if not the actual same tape in disguise.

Ditto for the Type II followup. Has 1992 Maxell XLII written all over it. Only thing throwing me for a loop are the hubs, which are the current, el cheapo variety. The 1992 lineup from Maxell was its last 'good' one. And the XLII's still had the two-color precision hubs at the time.

Those SHD type II cassettes were pretty good tapes. The type II tape lower on the totem pole was the HD tape.
