Well, I was perusing the 'bay, for some reason I had this nasty itch about me. "Search Aiwa tape decks" was the vibe I was getting. Anyway, there it was. With original user literature and remote, the XK-S9000. I did a little research on past auctions, and saw one was "stolen" in perfect condition for ~$525 recently. So I went to my sniper and set my maximum at $550. Nah, too low. Set it to $675. Nah, too high. Cancelled it. "Nah, you'll be kicking yourself if you let this get away, they never go for sale". So I set the Maximum to $600 and kept my fingers crossed. I wound up snagging it for $525. I'm going to pick it up hopefully Monday since the owner lives about 2 hours from where I live. Can't wait!! Anyone have a service manual for this bad boy? I'd really like to set the azimuth to the standard I'm used to, if necessary. I'd really appreciate it! Thanks guys! Pictures are on the way once I have it! *reelspin*

I'd never really looked closely at Awai decks. Checked it out on vintagecassette and it looks like a stunner! Very feature packed. Is yours champagne finish like the photo on their site? Yum.
P.S. just went to the 'bay. Looks like I answered the question -- they're all "gold" it seems...*yes*

Hi Kevin,
Wow, is that ever a nice looking deck! There are similarities, appearance-wise, to my Esoteric V-9000. The champagne finish and wood side panels are classy. It's a full featured deck and I posed the question here sometime ago about spending as much as 1/2 the original retail price for a low-hour deck.
I look forward to pictures and your comments about its performance, later.

Wow!! an Aiwa XK-S9000! Incredible deck and I would say you got a deal. I hope everything works as I think they can be hard to get serviced these days.

Yep, that's it! Thank you guys so much for being excited about it, I'm driving to the guy's house tomorrow to pick it up since he lives about 2 hours away. Even with gas and tolls, it's still cheaper than shipping it (since it weighs about 35 pounds). As far as servicing it... Well, if it needs pinch rollers, so be it. Unfortunately, unlike my JVCs, it's not direct drive, so it should be a lot of fun to do a belt job on. Oh well, to snatch up Aiwa's $1500 apolalypse tape deck for $525 seems a worthwhile accomplishment. This is IT though. I will not buy another tape deck again. In fact, I may put one up for sale. They're taking over my house, and unfortunately, it seems as though the tape recorded in deck A doesn't sound that great in decks B and C, even though their azimuth geometry is dead-on (and verified with the calibration tape from Matsushita). There's a loss of treble, even with dolby shut off, so something isn't quite right. *crying* I wonder if the head heights vary *scratchchin*. Maybe I should pick up Willy's Jig...

Well, here's a shot of it:

Thing looks like it was NEVER used. Opening the cassette bay actually SMELLS new, not a single drop of oxide on anything. Not on the rollers, the heads, the pressure rollers, nothing. So glad I wasted my money I busted my ass to earn to buy this.

You hate ME, yet you're the one with a dragon.
The 6900 needs a recording section calibration, it is COMPLETELY out of whack. Plays fantastic, so that's what its purpose is. My Aunt made a few hundred tapes back in the 80s that I like, but her tape deck ran a little too fast and its azimuth was WAAAAY off from the standard of all of my other decks, so I use the 6900 as the best source deck. All my other 3 headers w/ dual capstan have a fixed motor speed that's quartz locked, the 6900 is not, so it worked the best for the copying job.

i've had season tickets to both the dodgers, and angels, since the late '70's, and for a while during their heyday, the "Dragon's" (Daryl and Ms Tenille) had dodger seats as well, and sat just a few rows over from me. on occasion, Toni would sing the National Anthem before games.
well, seeing that i've always been a HUGE beach boys fan, i engaged daryl in many a conversation regarding their work the them. in fact, one of my absolute favorite later beach boys songs is "That Same Song", off the "15 Big Ones" LP. and yep, you guessed it; daryl worked the ivory's, and toni sang some gorgeous 'beach boy-ish' background vocals!
they had a couple of decent, charting, LP's, that got lots of airplay at the time, but geezus, these days record stores just GIVE their LP's away around here (i ALWAYS find them in the "3 for a dollar" bins around here...if not in the "10 for a dollar" bins.)
