Hello to all,
I need help how to replace the capstan belt on a Teac X-2000R. The instructions on the belt I bought on Ebay is poor "Loosen and lay components aside as needed to gain access to belt. Noting the belt path, remove the old belt from the capstan flywheels and lift belt off capstan motor pully.
I consider this poor instructions, no schematics etc.
Pleas help.

Skywavebe (http://www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=585) would probably be your best contact for that. He could probably talk you through it step by step.
There is or was also, in Hades (http://www.audiokarma.org), a photo essay documenting the same procedure, but for an X-1000R deck. If you dare (or for that matter, CAN) go there, you should be able to find it. It's in the tape section-the one that they could never be bothered to create until TapeHeads came around. Matt,
I started to look at the back and I notice that the back circuit can be remove out of the way by taking the screws off that are attached to the reel motors. After that I took the plugs out by and number them by order to find my way back. then I lift the circuit to give me spae to take the 5 screws that hold the capstan motor assist, and change the belt. the belt was stretch by 2 inches, no wonder would not play, now it does.
So know test record and compare to my overhaul Dragon to see who's the king. Althought I am very excited, I bought a box of 10 XLI new, 700.00 plus 10% off from ebay not bad 63.00 each. I am set with 14 new XLI and 2 TDK LX 180, alsi 4 Quantengy. Not a bad start. I will keep you posted.

Did it work on those directions before you changed the belt? Then it may just be a loose connection on something you re-assembled. Aren't those direct drive motors for the reel tables?

Before I change the belt only FF. I was very carefull, I am handy when it comes to electronics. After I change the belt, I press and it work, however it didn't rewind, so I started to play with the r122 and r222, then the r255 and r257 with no tentelo metet, guessing. Well after a play with it it woudn't even play. So I guess I screw up the adjustment. I got tire and put the case back on and went to sleep.
around 5:00 Pm Eastern time I took the case off and put up a tape that was recorderd press play and started to work fine and it's been doing so for 10 min. By the way the speed that is playing at is low. I want to get a secod reel but I think I going for Studer once this one is fix. So now i going to try to rewind and play reverse see what happens. At least i know it works perfect in foward mode and I don't know how long. The heads are like new. I going to find locally a good tech to bring it to specs.

This is strange now plays in reverse and rewinds good and FF is a bit slow. I am gueesing that after each adjustment you need to reboot the machine to set the new settings.
Am I correct?

So I just adjusted the R257 and the FF is good but I ghess i have to see one in action to compare. Well for a while it did not want omove i think this deck also needs lubrication. What kind of oil should I use.

So, I am begining to understand what the problem is. The deck works fine but not always. It works after I tried to 4-8 times after I place play. When it does all fuctions work. When it doesn't tries to engage plays for 5 seconds and then stops in Play, reverse, rewind, the oly one that works is foward. So after a while of observing my guess is a bad relay, because when is not working properly it tries to play then the tenssion arm gives up after 5 seconds, when it works the tension arms stay in place.
How does it records, well nice, I am using a Maxell UD, I want to try a XLI and see what happens and tomorrow I will do a comparisson with my cassette decks.

PS
I wonder if a studer will outperform the Teac, or a speed of 15 will sound even better.
