Hi all,
Because i want to repair my Sony TC-K555ESJ (japanese model, 100V) that is very weak left chanel by recording, i have disassembled the PB board in order to get the recording board under for checking.
but i have not found what seems wrong or goes bad. I assembled it carefully again.

After the PB assembly tightening i find when the cassette deck at stop mode and tape mode (monitor switch) one led segment only lits as normal. But changed to source mode: 2 segments of each chanel lit always . Sometime when i power off for several minutes and power up again, only one segment of each chanel lit, some time 2 by source mode.

When the cassette deck with a cassette is at tape mode now and i push play button again 2 led segments (or some time one only ) of each chanel lits and always like by source mode and no sound emitted or can be recorded now though the mechanics & control system work fine.

Before my repair attempt my Sony TC-k555ESJ plays back fine, records with weak left chanel only.

I do not know what is going wrong.

Here some pictures of my TC-K555ESJ:

TC-K555ESJ is one great looking deck, inside and out!

I can only make guesses as to what is happening with your deck:

Assuming the second LED segment on the display corresponds to -40dB level (like on my TC-KA3ES), there is possibly a loose connection somewhere causing the deck to pick up noise. Can you hear any AC hum from the line-out or headphone jacks in source mode? If you turn the rec level knobs down to 0, is the second segment still lit?

Since you removed and restored the upper playback circuit board, I suggest double-checking all cable connections to both playback & record boards. I remember the head cable connectors were tight fits with their mating headers on the circuit board for my TC-KA3ES, so verify all the head cables are fully snapped into place. If possible, use a multimeter to check for cable continuity from the heads to the circuit boards.

To check if the deck can still record, do a test recording and play the tape on another deck. If something is wrong on the playback side, it can appear that the deck cannot record due to no sound in tape mode during recording.

If you live in an area with high humidity, connector/header interconnects can suffer corrosion or oxidation, which will require careful cleaning.

Good luck!

I suggest you read the service manual of the 333ESA model, as they are basically similar.

By the way, do you mean you can hear the recorded sound of the left channel but it's weak?

SONY TC-K555ESJ repair up-date
After long time i can not repair it and let it as showpiece standing in the room. For few days i read a japanese blog repairing a Sony ES with same problem. he tells the cause of that problem:
The failing of high speed fuses in power supply circuit- These ROHM ICP -20 and ICP N-25. After replacing it- as testing - with lead wire my Tc-k55ESJ plays flawlessly again - thank you Mr. Showa in Japan!
