Hello
I have a TEAC A3300s and it has worked fine for a long time. All of a sudden, the supply reel became loose and is moving in and out away from the machine. I took the spindle (I think it's called the reel table?) off with the three screws and I see that the round metal wheel that it is attached to is also free to move in and out. Where is the lock down lever/screw/adjustment to keep this securely in place? Is this supposed to be adjustable to accommodate different types of reel thicknesses?..Or is something broken?

Look for a screw or something having become loosened around the shaft or a mount inside that has come free... my hunch as I've never opened mine. Did it still clutch correctly?
The hub/spindle is correct for the diameter and the reel should not factor as there is about a good smidge more to apply a cap to and I happen to have an NAB adapter just sitting on the takeup side leaving maybe 1/4" clearance frpm the inside of the adapter. Look at the top of the forum directory for stickies relating to the subject and Skywavebe, Des and others who know a lot more than I do will chime in shortly I would trust.
As for myself, I will strive to become an "oldbie" as well as I can with reel decks.

There are two grub screws in the small part of the round metal wheel, that bite on to the shaft. One or both of those may be loose.

I would say they have been lose for some time as they don't typically come lose as long as someone does not mess with them. Two things to note as you tighten them. One- some shafts have flat spots for the locking nut to meet against and the placement of the reel table should be positioned so as to meet the flats, the the second warning is that when you got the right reel table height position as indicated by a pack of tape exactly in the middle of the reel center hub- you should see space on each side of the reel so that tape never touches the flange. Then make sure to tighten just enough by hand. Do not use real high torque in tightening as the reel table material is pot metal not stainless and it can strip out if you really apply a lot of hand force. If this happens, then you need a sub assembly- below the reel table to replace what you stripped or you can drill and apply a Heliax coil into the holes thus establishing a new thread for yet a larger locking nut. This is what was done when we would come across stripped out sub assemblies due to over tightening. This thread coil insert was available at hardware stores.

You guys are the best! The screws were exactly where you said and I tightened them and everything is A-OK. I just put on an old Maxell 35-180 from a batch that I bought on flea-bay and it sounds great! I got 10 tapes for 80 bucks and my intent was to bulk erase them to use, but the music that came on them is so good that I'm gonna keep em as is. Anyway it gives me an excuse to buy more tapes. Thanks again fellow tapeheads. BTW my name is Ed also.
