Before getting the Grado The Statement, I used a Grado Sonata. I believe the Grado Gold is the same without the wooden body.

Sonata was so so. A bit too muddy and not enough detail in my opinion.

The thing is if you try it and like it, that is all that matters.

I had one last year and it sounded good but just wasn't detailed sounding enough for me so I sold it along with a turntable. I always end up going back to MC cartridges for the better detail.

I had an early version of the silver which was really good.

The gold is a hand selected silver, If it were me I'd give it a shot.

Good Luck!

Along those precious metal lines, I have an old Grado G+ with a broken stylus. I'm supposed to replace it with a Grado Silver. Should I? Or are there other options? What say you all? Cheers for now. David. :)

David in that family you can use any stylus from the black to the gold, even the black sounds good and is cheap.*Hi5*

I use a Red on my Technics SL-5 and it sings beautifully. If you read the specs these carts. have really extended freq. response

I actually wrote to Grado asking what would be best on my G+ and they, of course, recommended the Prestige Gold 1. Go figure. But, if the cart is that good, maybe I'll go gold.

P.S. I asked if they had the black dampening goop or the stylus removal tool, and they had neither.

Friend of mine bought a Thorens with the Grado Gold a while back and while I like some of Joe's stuff, I wasn't that impressed with this cartridge. It wasn't bad for what it was, just, as Dave says, not as detailed as others. If it's a decent deal it might be worth it.
