I recently read that the best type II cassette currently being made is the Fuji DR-II. The reason for this is that they haven't degraded the quality of their cassettes, unlike Maxell & TDK. I think this only applies to consumer mass-market cassettes, not the professional/studio cassettes.

I'd believe it; Fuji always did make pretty decent tapes. However, the Akai cassettes are as good IMHO. Not a lot of people know about them, though, so they might not have even been considered.

I picked up some GX type II tape recently, but haven't used it yet. I bought it on flea-bay & the guy selling it still has some more for sale.

I think I'll do some recording and compare it to XL-IIS and BASF chrome and let you know....

Yeah, I've bought 4 boxes of the Akai GX-90 & I can tell you, they are pretty good tapes & cheap, $8/box ($7/box for the GX-60) @ www.batteriesandbutter.com. They sound good & are well made.

I keep forgetting to ask you, where did you read this?

I forget; it was some hi-fi online magazine or blog. It was on the internet, but I can't remember where. It wasn't a forum or newsgroup.
