I guess there's some truth to the old saying that the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree...

Not too long ago I picked up a cool looking little Phillips CD / tape boombox in a thrift store for $4 which turned out to work fine after some deoxit to the volume pot. As a result, my 1 1/2 year old son now has his own music station and now it's time to make him his own mixtape to play.

Rather than load up a bunch of kiddie songs (got plenty of those) I'm thinking I will make him a Toddler Mixtape with a bunch of "oldie-but-goodie" songs that have catchy, clean lyrics.

Here are some tracks that I have put aside so far:

The Lion Sleeps Tonight
Here Comes the Sun
Splish Splash
Yakety Yak
The Banana Boat Song
Lolipop
Coconut
Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head
Rockin' Robin
Rock Around The Clock

These tracks are all relatively short and I'd like to at least fill up a C-60...

Any ideas????

Octopus's Garden is one that comes to mind.

Thanks! Great Idea!

And while I was at it I added Yellow Submarine...

The Beatles have several worth putting on there. :)

Might as well get him into some classic instrumentals as well.

Dance, shimmy and sway stuff...

Apache
Mancini
Love's Theme-Barry White
Popcorn-Hot Butter
Joy-Apollo 100
Breezin'-George Benson

You could see if he has fun with The Good The Bad and The Ugly (all the grunt noises in the chorus, etc ought to be fun to exaggerate)

Snoopy and the Red Baron

Get your son hooked on Roy Orbison ASAP
She's a Fool-Leslie Gore (the Shaka-doolas will be fun to imitate)
Western Union has all the dit-dits

RUBBER BISCUIT

Thanks, Stephen! I'l look into some of those. I read your list to my wife and she was especially thrilled with Snoppy & the Red Baron.

When I was his age I really loved Manfred Mann songs, in particular 5 4 3 2 1 and Doo Wah Diddy.

Thanks to all of the toddler-friendly music selections you suggested! Between you guys and the fellas over at boomboxery.com I was able to easily fill up a Maxell UR C-90 rather than settle for a C-60. :)

The little guy heard some of it this morning and was bouncin' and dancin' around the living room. My wife was diggin' it, too.

Thanks again to all of you who helped!

Here's the final track list:

Side A
Julie Andrews – Do-Re-Mi
Manfred Mann – Do Wah Diddy Diddy
The Jacksons – Rockin’ Robin
The Beatles – Love Me Do
Willy Wonka Cast – Oompa-Loompa Song

The Coasters - Yakety Yak
Bobby Darin – Splish Splash
The Beatles – Yellow Submarine
Richard Sherman –Supercalifragilisticexpialidoceous
The Beatles – She Loves You
Roy Orbison – Oh, Pretty Woman
The Drifters – Under The Boardwalk
The Chordettes – Lollipop
BJ Thomas – Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head

Santana does Belafonte – Banana Boat Song (live)

Hi JaeTee,

I can see some other parents wanting to copy your set list... if you don't mind transfering and burning it to CD!

With that much exercise your son should have no problem burning off some energy. Now, you'll have to step it down a bit, and create a lullaby mix tape.

LOL! Yea, this tape is his "play" music... I've got the lullabye mixtape covered for quieter moments. It's full of classic rock tracks that have been redone to sound like lullabyes. It's funny hearing Led Zepplin, Metallica and Queen presented that way...

For anyone else be interested in making a tape like this for your kids, I got most of the tracks that I didn't have already from www.mp3panda.com for around $0.20 each. The ones I already had were on vinyl, which I then ripped down to MP3 using Sony Soundforge and MP3 Maker by Magix.

When I had the tracks collected, I used Nero to burn them to an audio CD and used the "normalize" setting. I know that compresses the music somewhat but I did it to keep the levels constant from track to track so that I would not have to monitor a 30 track mixtape by adjusting the levels separately for each track. CD sounds great and is 79 minutes long. To fill up the C-90, the last three tracks were recorded onto the tape individually.

I wish I had seen this a few weeks ago! Been trying to compile some music for my daughter (3) onto a cassette - hopefully it will stop her from 'playing' with the Tascam 32 'singing machine' and hiding stuff inside cassette decks!
