Best guess is the belt needs replacing. Check out this link (http://cgi.ebay.com/TEAC-X-7R-THRU-X2000R-SERIES-SEALED-M-BELT_W0QQitemZ170250222799QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item 170250222799&_trkparms=39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A10|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14) for a BIN on the bay (no affiliation). Great and very desirable deck... tell us more about it.

Before you rush out and buy a new belt, it's very possible that it's not even the culprit. The belt drives only the capstans and not the reel tables. Even with a bad or broken belt, the deck SHOULD still engage in play mode-albeit very slowly as the takeup reel tries to drag the tape across the heads with direct tape tension to the supply reel.

You said that fast wind engages? So that definitely rules out the reel tables being stuck against the face plate. It's a fairly common problem with decks that get shipped and aren't properly packed. It's quite a nuisance. The good news is that it's an easy fix and is seldom indicative of any permanent damage.

The next most likely culprit I can think of is the tension being off. Sometimes if it gets too out of whack (can also happen while in transit), the play will not even engage.

So I would open the deck up. Please see the attached picture.

On the left hand side of the deck, you will see two small plastic dials. They are molded for turning with a flathead screwdriver. With a tape loaded and the power on (that means you will need to be very, VERY careful with what you touch inside the deck. It would be very easy to get zapped. I know. I've done it), just slowly twist the two dials to and fro. After each bit of a turn, run through all the transport functions (play, FF, RW, reverse) and just repeat the process untill *ALL* functions perform the way you like. Just a word of caution: you can set it to far to one extreme so that when fast wind is engaged, it will keep going and not respond to any transport functions. The deck will only stop if the tape runs out (will go flopping around the deck and destroy the end of that tape), you shut the power off (not recommened), or else very quickly turn one of the dials to a different setting until the deck is responsive again.

It's a bit of a grunt job. It's tedious and time consuming. But nothing that I would consider to be difficult or mentally challenging. Pretty much anyone can do it.

Now the purists will say that it's "seat of the pants", "not very scientific", "not precise", and so forth. And I agree. But in a pinch, it will do.

I mean if it DOES get the deck to work, then why not?

Keep us posted.

Yeap, the belt is very loose and sticky. would OEM be better or the one on Ebay will do?

Last time I checked, Teac still had them in stock here in SoCal at their Montebello headquarters.

You can call them at 323.727.7627

P/N 5534692001.

Will be in the $20 ballpark, plus shipping.

Glad you found your issue... I did fail to mention to open up the deck and check out the belt.... and just not get one hoping it would solve the problem. Also I should have looked for theteacman's auction on the bay and not just any to just any belt that would work... theteacman (http://cgi.ebay.com/Teac-X-2000-Series-Main-Belt-with-Install-Instructions_W0QQitemZ330262241001QQihZ014QQcatego ryZ67814QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) has a great rep and decent prices.

Matt I see what you are talking about, but is the belt supose to be loose, it makes a small loop and it is a bit sticky not to much. In case I need to replace the belt, is it easy to do.

Thanks Accoustic, I see that the belt is a bit loose and makes a small loop and it feels like is abit sticky or maybe oil.

Funny it seems that the more I use it the better it works, although I don't think that it is calibrated to any specific tape.
