Does any one know where Sony hid the memory backup battery or cap for this pre amp?
Sony put a forest of boards in this amp and I can't seem to find a component that fills the memory backup role.
thanks.

Hi Todd,
The best way to find the item is from a service manual or owners manual if it
gave indications of changing it. Next is to look for what kind of devices they use to keep memory. In tape decks a lot of them were stored using the then popular Super Caps that were 1 to 2.2 Farad at 5 V. These things can look like large capacitors in black and gold or other colors- they are usually soldered in. I would look on control area boards not audio handling. Most probable would be the control board where displays are attached. If in the slight chance they used a Lithium battery- well from computer experience you should know what that looks like- it would be a round Lithium cell about the size of a quarter. Have a good look around and see what you find. I would like to give you the exact place but I do not have a service manual of this model to assist. I have worked on some ES models but not all of them.

I looked at the schematic at HiFi Engine, this is a microprocessor design with 640K of memory on the CPU IC. There's also a sub-computer IC connected with that but it doesn't use a super cap or battery as far as I can see, just relies on the non-volatile memory on the IC.
