Does anyone know if this unit is worth buying on ebay? How is the quality being compared to a Teac and Akai?

If its cheap and it works might be fun. It uses the same single motor transport as dozens of other Sony models. It was at the higher end of their single motor machines and had 3 heads. It still wasn't anything special though it looks impressive for what it is. If I had a choice between that and a similar single motor Akai I'd take the Akai. They are by no means perfect either but have a slight edge in performance. Things to look for when they get this old is bad rubber parts suck as the idler and belts, pinch roller etc and of course head wear.

Thanks for the info dave. Really appreciate it. Do you know how many hours the heads on the sony lasts? I like to collect a sony. I already have 3 top of the line Akais and a Teac x2000r. I was thinking of picking a Sony. I have already found a source for pinch rollers and belts on ebay. Don't know much about heads

There are general head relpacements available to suit many decks. Sony doesn't normally get wacky or something so you should be able to do that. I believe there are a few thread about head replacement in the forums a search should reveal them.

Sonys aren't 'glamorous' but they are good decks and well built most of the time, your choice included in the 'most' dept.
