I have my "new to me" Teac X-1000R I restored yesterday now plopped into one of my main systems and running.

It sounds amazing. I'm playing some 2-track tapes on it I made on my own via my Otaris and even though this is a 4-track machine, I cannot believe how good it sounds and operates. Kudos Teac!! :)

BTW, that big black thing in the middle of the room isn't a coffee table, it's my subwoofer!

Very Clean set-up,kind of wants you to remove your shoes when you enter the room:)

I appreciate the comments FF. I've always strived for that kind of "clean" look.

Funny you mention the shoes because I do request they be left at the front-door!!:)

Joel, Your space is enviable and I can almost hear everything in action from hear. Isn't the left spool on the otari about 3mm off horizontal - LOL, (Only Joking) You have some lovely equipment.

Wow! I too am humbly impressed. Makes my setup look ameteurish in comparison. Got the asymetric look going?I would've expected to see both decks either side by side or else bookending the center table. A couple of questions though. That center "table" is actually a SUB? What in Gods name brand is it? I don't think I've ever seen a monstrosity like that. And how does it sound? Just the virtue of its location kind of threw me for a loop. My conventional thinking and what I was taught always said that a sub should go in or near a corner wherever possible. I know that bass frequencies are nondirectional, but I figured that the contrours of the perpendicular walls served to amplify and better dissipate the low sounds.

The other thing is what is the X-1000R resting on? Those aren't auxiliary speakers are they? You know that you should never, EVER place a tape deck on or anywhere less than about 6" from any loudspeakers. Though I have to admit that MY X-1000R is right there and the outer edge of the supply reel is, when loaded, exacty 6" from my Infinitys.

Maybe *I* need to sit down and become a TH student! LOL!

Seriously though. Nice setup. Glad that the X-1000R is set up in its new home.

Hi Matt and everyone else who responded,
Thanks for the comments! Appreciate the feedback.

The subwoofer is a stereo transmission line design from a company called Fried. They are still in business. Matter of fact, all the speakers in this room (there are 2 more in the rears that match the mains you can't see) are transmission line loaded and my own versions of their best speaker they ever made--the Valhalla system.

Anyhow, Fried claimed a response down to 15Hz from that sub. I have measured it up about 5dB at 20Hz so which is the limits of my test equipment so I'll take their word for it, it would be close.

As for placement, it's a "stereo sub" with 2 drivers firing on each end so in order to perserve the stereo sound into the bass, it is recommended to set that sub up the way I have it. More or less in front of the mains with the drivers in the sub close in proximity to them. A corner just wouldn't work for this sub because then 1 driver would fire right into the wall and the transmission line vent for that side would be sealed off! In other words you'd defeat the whole purpose of the transmission line design which is a complex design yet yeilds some of the best sounding bass you'll ever hear. No boom boom boom here.

Due to the size of the room and all the drivers involved (its a complex 5.2 channel system), I use a parametric EQ on the bass starting at 100Hz and below. Same exact thing they use now in hi-tech subwoofers (like the better Velodynes) come built with inside--a parametric EQ to flatten the bass to the room at hand. IMHO, there is no other way to get a flat response in a room. You are going to have some serious humps somewhere which destroy the clarity and definition of the bass if you do not "room correct" it.

The "before" and "after" results of the parametric EQ I use are simply jaw-dropping. I was able to eliminate all the peaks and valleys and am flat +/- 2dB from 100Hz down to 20Hz save for the 20Hz 5dB hump I left alone (which is more/less inaudible unless you're upstairs where all the dishes are rattling).

The Teac is resting on 2 pedestal speaker stands, those are NOT speakers. That would be a bad thing. As for the pedestal stands, it was either do that or come up with a wall mount shelf that could support 60 lbs. and that scares me too much. I'd hate to come home one day and discover the shelf ripped out of the wall and deck destroyed. So I took a safer approach and used the pedestal stands.

Yes, I could move the Teac to the other side of the rack, but then I'd need to move the turntable stand to where the Teac is now on the side of the room so it wouldn't gain me anything really. But it is a thought, and may look better----I'll ponder it!

I think that Otari is about 6" from the center speaker, I'll move it over some to be safe--easy to do with that rolling Otari stand. Thanks for the heads up there, didn't even think of that!

Hope that helps and thanks again everyone for the nice feedback!

I think I like it this way better with the Teac up front as Matt suggested. What do you guys think? I feel like a woman.

Here is the rear of the room as well:

I like it. Definitely looks better IMO with the two decks in the same forward field of view. As for "feeling like a woman", I hope you were referring to a Shania Twain song! :D

I like it better now after a few hours of living with it this way too. As for feeling like a woman you know how it goes...."honey maybe this 345 pound sofa would look better over in another room" then, you get it there and....

"honey, I don't like it here at all. Let's put it upstairs instead!"

We had a house once that had to have the window unit removed to get a sofa into the room through the hole, never to be moved again. I would recommend this approach - LOL, The room looks so much better Joel.

And I feel your pain on the sofa thang. Been there, done that! ;)
