If you've never experienced halibut fish and chips, it's waaaay better than any cod or other substitute. Especially beer battered halibut chips. Went halibut fishing today and caught this nice 20-something pounder off the south end of Shelter Island up here. My son (AJ, 7) is used for scale. And no, the guy holding it is not me, but my brother in law Brian.

Enjoy!

For such a little guy, they are powerful. This guy took off and dove on me 4 times as I reeled and hauled him (her?) up from 120ft. Each time it'd get to the surface, see the boat, and effortlessly strip line off the ocean rod star drag and dive back down. It was a feisty one. Now it's a tasty one....

Now that's a big, though ugly, fish. Sounds like some fun you had getting it in. Did you cut it up yourself? Here in Kansas I've filleted a few crappie and largemouth bass but I wouldn't know where to start with that halibut.

Stew... that is definitely out of line.:D

But this statement does reinforce your suspicion.... I don't think at 7 AJ is small for his age but he is the only one in the photo that fits the description of "little guy" to me... though he sounds like an experienced diver. Hmmm. (Oh no, here we go again!*devil*) Yes! *el_loco*

My wife filleted it. She's a life-long Alaskan and can fillet a big halibut in less time than I can find the fillet knife. She's gooooooood at that, and many other outdoorsy (and indoorsy) things ....

We made a beer-batter and made halibut fish and chips. Mmmmmm... superb! One of those things where you just couldn't stop eating one more piece .... We got about 15lbs of meat off that one single fish. Yum!

Before stuwee gets all excited, that's not me in the picture holding the fish. I'm doing the honorable hard-work part by operating the camera. That's my brother-in-law who has been staying with us from OR as he passes thru AK on his way to visit family and friends.

Dang,
That's nice. I'm always jealous of those who have a place to drop a line for some good fish.

Nice one Scorpion!

I haven't be halibut fishing since around '83. They sure are a great fight when you get one online.

There is only one way to eat halibut imo and that's the batter style you described earlier. The deep fried halibut was the only fish I could stand to eat the whole 12 years I was in AK. I loved catching salmon but couldn't stand eatin'em.

I must admit I am a bit envious of the halibut fishing and Alaska in general. It's been 24 years since I've been there. I still consider it to be home.

Good luck on your next trip.

Well, come on along! Beer battered halibut. It's a Last-meal-death-row essential.
