Just received one, bought for £25 +£10 delivery. Arrived in a very good condition, W&F 0.045% WRMS, almost on spec, the amorphous heads look new, the frequency response is excellent. However the sound is not good at all. I did some measurements and found two major problems and several smaller ones. Major issues are:

1) it uses several 4066 chips in the signal path AND an additional non-linear JFET muting circuit on the output.

2) the meter rectification IC (IC801, BA6800A) introduces a horrible amount of distortion in the output signal. Pictures show the spectrum of 1 kHz -20 dB from Dolby level signal just passing through the deck in the SOURCE monitor mode. First - with meters connected and second with meters disconnected (CN121 connector is detached).

I may post some simple modification details later - this deck can perform much better!

Just received one, ...

Thanks Alex. two questioons, is that really DRM-800A, or DR-M800A? I know Denon waffled back and forth on model number series and used both of those designations but the only one I have in my picture files is a DRM-800A. And cripes, man, how many decks do you own now?!? *grin*

Yes, my mistake! It is DRM-800A. And I have over 65 decks now... I think *hypnot* . I've made a list of 30-35 decks I definitely would like to keep and (hopefully) would eventually get rid of the rest - or just take them apart.

You've got it bad dude, really bad. I thought I was in that boat, but I peaked at 28 and have been paring down ever since.

Come on Rob, count. We all judge our sickness here against others. If I have one less than you, then I either better get busy or feel good about the mildness of my condition. *Hi5*
