As Matt knows I was bidding on this tape, I just won a super rare 1985 XL-I Maxell tape auction. It went higher then most tapes, but this baby is mine to use in my collection of frames. Anyway take a look here at the pic. Paid $69 for it plus ship. Also got a Sony HF-X tape as well. Funny no one bid on that one.

Nice! That's going to look great framed, I like 46 minute tapes, it's such a strange length.

anyone know the reason WHY they made 46's?

Because 1/2 of 46 would be 23, and 22-point-something was the theoretical limit to the side of a 33-1/3 rpm LP. So they were perfectly matched to stuff one LP per tape, with Side A matched to LP side A and so forth. Same reason for the C-90 cassette. Half of that is 45, and that's one LP per side of a C-90 (plus or minus a few seconds) if an LP had 22-1/2 minutes per side.

I assumed that lp lengths had something to do with it, but I wasn't sure, thanks for shedding some light on the topic.

There was also a lot of optimization about tape thickness too, as the tape length grew longer it necessarily had to be thinner. The purists love the C-60 length because it is generally a little thicker than a C-90 tape, without giving up too much in time. You didn't see C-46's around too much in quantity, actually.

Congratulations! Fortunately, I already have examples of both 1985 (American release) XLI's. Of course had that one been a C-90, I would've made a play for it too.
I wish I had known that the 'purists' love the C-60's. I passed on an opportunity to buy about a dozen cartons of the gold and white 1988 Maxell MX C-60.
I had bought some before and had to practically give them away just to get rid of them. Hence why I passed this time. I'm still sitting on a lot of BlackWatch 4040 as it is.

Keep me in mind if those deals come around. Remember, I'm the guy who's really excited about using a bunch of 30 minute TDK SM-X tapes.
