I listened to a new single by the Steve Miller Band today, while driving to work.
His " Fly Like An Eagle" album harkens to a special time in 1977, when four of us in our Electronics 12 class, under Mr. Wagstaff's tutelage, had just finished our group's final project.
We built a 4' X 8' rolling, 3-frequency light organ. So, not only did we etch the circuit board from scratch and solder in all the circuit components and assemble a housing for the control box, but we had to plan and build the the organ, itself. There were 96 exterior Christmas bulbs used, and it was built with 2"X10" fir framing and a full sheet of 5/8" particle board to mount the lights. I found out later, Ed and Bob had stolen all the wood from a new house being built next door to Ed's parents. We mack-tacked the outside, gave it a few lifting handles and coaster wheels. Then we used 2 different types of prism glass to cover the front of the viewing area. So, during lunch hour we gave it the big test and played the "Space Intro" and "Fly Like An Eagle" cuts. Holy crap, it was mesmerizing! And I'm sure our teacher was so enthralled he, probably, thought of lighting up a joint. Mind you this was during daylight hours and we were quite proud when we became the talk of school when we would tote the light organ to most of the house parties. Between the four of us, we had agreed each of us would borrow it for one year, then pass it on. That lasted about six years and I ended up with it last. I still have the control box but had to leave the light organ behind when we moved to the new house.
