Here we have it: The official TapeHeads.Net second anniversary discussion. Has it been that long already? On May 12th, 2008, our site-which was the successor to the now closed Yahoo! TapeTalk board went live to the world.

For a little look back on this short but storied history, read about 2009 In Review (http://www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=6954) as well as the story and background (http://www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=4159)behind the sites creation.

Now I'm not what you would consider an artistically inclined individual, but I thought that this weeks homepage picture would be perfectly befitting of of the occassion.

Now I'm fully aware that we are sort of in transition and limbo vís-a-vís the logo and colors right now. The new blue, red, and gray logo was quietly rolled out about a month ago and the forum colors were quickly changed to reflect that. However, the front pages are in a holding pattern right now and I will be installing a new program in the not too distant future. Consequently, it's in a sort of hybrid layout, with the older colors and styling remaining in place with the new logo plastered at the top and bottom for the time being. With the existing program being slated for removal, I didn't see the need to re-write them since an all new design and layout is in the works anyway. The secondary pages, which see little traffic, still display the old colors. This is all just temporary and it will be all changed to match here hopefully before too much longer.

Now moving on.

I gave a heads up that there will be a giveaway in conjunction with this occassion. I am still ironing out the details on how I want to do it.

But here's a little teaser for y'all.

Check out the prizes that will be offered up. Since this day revolves around a second anniversary, it only makes sense that the number two will be the central theme. As such, the prizes offered conform thereto: all are either "Type II" or else come in a pair (i.e. two).

http://x-2000r.angelcities.com/images/tapestuff/TH_2ndAnniversaryPrizes.JPG

1. A ten pack carton of Maxell XLII 90 tapes
2. This fine selection of C-100 Type II Sampler Pack
3. This assortment of vintage Maxell Type II tapes
4. A Maxell XLII "EE" 35-180 Reel tape
5. A pair of Maxell XLI 35-90B reel tapes

There will be TWO winners. Each will get to pick something from that assortment. The contest, while still being planned, will be restricted to active, loyal, and in-good-standing members only. Basically those who either have been here for a year or longer and/or have a post count of 150 or higher. This site wouldn't have gotten to where it is without the support of our long standing and active members. As such, I feel it only fair that those people should be entitled to the rewards. I don't think it's fair that someone who joined either yesterday or else 18 months ago-but only posts once every four months (or up until now hasn't posted anything at all)-should be allowed to reap the benefits.

Sorry lurkers. Maybe next year. You want a shot at a piece of this action (which I feel is among the most generous I've ever offered), you have to earn it.

More updates to come.

Anyway. You all know who you are.

Thanks for the continued support.

@ EMS:

Well you are relatively new here but a regular. I may still revise the final eligibility requirements at the time of the contest. So fear not.

"and" or "or" ? I mean I have more than 150 posts but have been here less than a year having joined in 2009.05.24 and my first post being even later.

It's an "either or", which means as long as you meet at least *one* of those criteria, you will be eligible. But as I said to EMS above, the actual final conditions are still being determined. What I said above is just to lay a framework to give an idea of the requirements. The whole point of this is to make sure that anyone who meets at least one of the following parameters DOESN'T win:

1. Just joined the site within the last 60 days.

2. Has made few or no posts.

Examples of those people who I'm intentionally excluding might be one of the following:

Someone who joined back in August of 2008, hasn't been online in six months, then suddenly decides to jump out of hiding and try and claim the freebies.

Someone who joins the site today with the sole purpose and goal of trying to intercept the freebies, only to take them, then run and never be seen again.

Someone who lurks around regularly, but never contributes anything (i.e. a lurker) then suddenly feels that because he's "here", he ought to have a shot at winning.

You get the idea.

The folks who I'd want to see win this are some combination of either a) the top 25 in the post counts, B) are active enough to be present in the Members Only sections (the've asked for the access), or C) both.

Write a PM to a moderator and he will give you the password.

And a cookie is a small text file that the server can place on your PC. A cookie has a domain where it is from and a expiration date after which it is deleted. Every time the browser sends a request to a server, it also adds all appropriate cookies to the request and this is how the "remember me on this computer" function works.

A cookie is only valid in the domain that created it, for example a cookie from tapeheads will not be given to google. However, if a web site uses third party scripts or ads then those servers can also place a cookie on your PC to basically track you trough any site that also uses the same advertisers. In any case, a web browser usually has a setting to allow all cookies, allow cookies only from the main server and disable cookies completely.

A Javascript script can also read and set cookies, but again, only the ones that belong to the domain that the script is hosted at.

UPDATE (all interested members please read)

I have decided how I'm going to do this.

It will be a two-part contest incorporating the types of contests that I have done in the past.

PART I of the contest will be "Pick A Number".

It's basically the same thing as I did with the 1000th member giveaway, but with a twist (only someone with a mind as warped as mine could hatch something like this up).

I loaded a tape onto the Tascam 32. And filmed it running.

The object of this part of the contest will be quite simply to guess the number that the display readout will be showing when the tape stops.

But there's a catch. Last time, I simply filmed a full length pass of one tape being wound at high speed. This time, the tape is filmed. But throughout the video, I play it, pause it, fast forward, rewind, stop, and change the speed.

So there is absolutely, positively no way in advance that any of you can possibly try and 'guestimate' where it's going to be at. Not until you see the video.

The person who gueses closest to what the actual number is will win a first round pick of any one of the prizes shown earlier in this discussion. It doesn't matter if you are over or under. Closest actual differential wins. So even if you guess "over" but are still closest in the sense of fewst number of points between your guess and actual, you still win.

That contest will commence here in the next day or two and then end when the second half of the contest begins.

And that will be "Name Those Tunes".

During the video where you are to guess the number, I premixed 6 (six) song samples and recorded them. They will be playing in the background. Anyone who correctly identifies the artist and title of the songs will win a second round pick from the prizes shown above.

So although there are two parts to this giveaway, one person can conceivably win twice.

Stay tuned to the "Members Only" section over the next 24 to 48 hours for the first part of the contest to be posted. It will run for a certain duration. Once it closes and all entries are in, the second half of the contest will commence a day or two later.

I think that is extremely fair--I'll get posting so I can play next year!

Happy anniversary--so glad I found this site!! *wave*
