While the larger console machines like the Studer A820 are no doubt awesome, particularly if mixing sound with pictures in a studio environment due to their time code synchronising features, my preference is in the portable version the Studer A810. This deck is top of my wish list at the moment and I have yet to play an open reel deck at all. It looks awesome and built like a tank. Will be saving for a long time though for one of these, perhaps I may need to dispose of some surplus gear too.

Anyone have any experience of this deck?

Remind me. Isn't/wasn't Studer the "pro" arm of Revox? Kind of like what Tascam is to Teac? Or were the two companies separate?

Anyway to answer the question. No. I have not had the pleasure of trying one of those decks. They look nice though. Only "Euro" deck I've ever touched was a Tandberg TD-20A. Nice but a bit finicky. And seen, but never used a B77.

backwards.

Studer was the parent company. ReVox was the consumer offspring.

Correct Matt,

The founder of the Revox company - Willy Studer, started to manufacture Commercial equipment with the STUDER badge having initially concentrated on the REVOX brand. Machines were all designed and built at their German factory.

The A810 comes in many versions and configurations and includes a 4 speed version which can run at 3 3/4 , 7 1/2 , 15 & 30 IPS. Variable speed and time code are commercial requirements as are the console trolleys for ease of movement. A very heavy duty machine indeed.

Even the operating / service manual is 462 pages long!!!
