I'm watching a few of these. What is a good price for one? I'm also watching a 581. These aren't working. I am trying to get into fixing and reselling some decks. I have bought 4 this week.
Some will be test subjects for our tube output mod. Others will be fixed and put on my site.

Hi Larry,
Try ebay's "advanced search" where you can look at recently completed listings. That may show you what some of those decks sold for and give your "real world" numbers.
Of course, you may strike out looking there, but it has helped me out in the past...
The 1000 never really interested me because is simply takes up way too much space.
Regarding the 581 (another space hog, but different)... I kind of always felt that a 3-head deck that doesn't have monitoring might as well be a 2-header, dontchathink? I guess Nak figured having the tones and cal controls on there make it somewhat unnecessary. But, I'll also assume that anyone who knows enough to be looking at a 581 probably would MUCH rather have a 582 instead. Short version, 581's don't seem to sell for nearly what the 582's can get... Yet, the 581 offers the same level of tremendous performance as the 582. I'm thinking that if you get that one up and running properly, it might end up being one of those decks that you end keeping for yourself rather than selling for not much return on your time and effort. (of course, I could be wrong about all of that... just thinking out loud)
Good luck whatever way you go!

I just like the look of the 1000. I may put my R2R up for sale. I don't use it much at all. And it is taking up space.
Thanks for the advice. I'll do as you say and check the prices. I don't monitor any way. Haven't had my AKGs out in awhile
Thanks

I would stay away from 481/581/681/670 models until you know what you are doing. 482, 680, LX 5, BX300 and RX 202 are great decks to begin with as they are popular. Having a true 3 head design makes alignment much easier.
The 1000/700 tend to sell for less even when rebuilt because they lack ZX capability and they are heavy to ship. Restoring these involves more pieces/parts, and the units are less servicable in terms of access.

Hi Larry,
You should be able to pick up a good going 1000 for less than $200. I reckon they are very under rated and should sell for lots more given the history and the build quality. Sound quality is also very good and playback with metal tapes is also very good.

hi i have 2 1000 tri tracer i have researched a little the uk service nakamichi has a lot of spares ,the only thing that cant be got is pinch rollers and the usa engineer terrys rubber rollers seemed pretty confident he could press on new rubber on the rollers and the uk tapeheads member naknovice who has 5 1000zxl said they are worth working with. because they are non metal setting they go for very little a very good one boxed and remote £135 6 month ago the mk2 had metal capability and there is a non working zxl on e bay uk at the moment

Well she said 200.00. But said for me to make an offer. I might try 125.00. Gotta buy 1000 shells from NAC and ship to the UK. So will see. I'm waiting on some payments today before I make offers.
Looking at some Tascams too.
