Anyone use the peak markers on deck displays?

I have two decks,One is a JVC TD-V711 and the other is a Sony 850ES.Both have little markers on the level display for recording peaks,one for type one one for type two and one for Metal tape.When setting recording level the meter's are not supposed to go beyond these marks for optimal recording levels.Does anyone have these level marks on there decks display and do you use them or do you sometimes let the meters go slightly beyond the mark?

I use the markers as a guide, but with a decent tape I am not afraid to let the peaks go higher.

None of my decks have those displays, but some have a peak-hold function that's useful during previewing a recording session to see what the peak over the entire session would be. Those I find useful.

Can you post some close-up pics of your decks meters?

I'm about to get a tape deck with meters on them, and I will use them because all we can get locally is TDK "B" and "D" and Sony "EF" blanks. I should check what's asvailable up in Sydney one day.

These markers are meant as guidance so you do wise enough the right thing.
The older the machine the more you can go beyound the marks.

i always set it to where it just kisses the highest marker. always get excellent results on my PIONEER CT-W910R. and it's a 1989 model, too...
