View Full Version : 10,5'' is norm. Where do I get 12-12½'' reels?

We all know about the smaller sizes up to 10,5'' for R2R machines.
But my machine is made to serve 12 or 12,5'' reels 1/4''.
(Not sure which of those sizes it is)
Actually will the extra size of the reel size double up the length of the tape length on the 10,5'' reel.
But the big question is:
Where do I get these reels...........empty or full?
I can always load them myself from pancakes or donor reels and splice myself.
I have been looking on eBay and google and everywhere else i can imagine.
I know they exist.
I have seen them in function maybe 10 years ago and read about them recently.
I want them very much.
They would make have 1½ hour on 15 ips ½ track subsidiary 1 hour, depending on tape quality.
Anybody on this great forum able to help me with this issue?
I prefer shopping in EU if possible due to taxes and laws here.

(Is this the Telefunken machine? I think they could also accomodate reel plates, an early type of reel format that originated in the 1940s. Those were about 11 1/2 or 11 3/4" IIRC.)
I don't know if 12 1/2" reels are made any more. I doubt it. Footage wise, they hold between that which a 10 1/2" reel can hold, and a 14" reel can hold. 3750' was what you could get of 1 1/2 mil tape on one of these reels.
I don't know if any 1 mil tape was sold on this size reel.

No. Not Telefunken from the early days but Lyrec Frida (http://www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=442&highlight=lyrec) from the modern days.

I know a source for 1/2" x 14" NAB reels, 9200 ft of tape but don't know if that's what yopu're searching for. They don't list a 12 -to- 12-1/2" reel.

Thanks, but what I'm looking for is not ½'' but 1/4'' and I guess 14'' is a little too much.
But thanks anyway.

Then, this probably means that the limit is to use bobbys with "platters", that are a bit bigger than the conventional metal reels:
