I'm a snob-a-holic, My name is Craig, *wave* Which is an oxymoron, as I don't have a TOTL RtR deck. I apologize for blatant bashing of type I tapes. I just didn't get it. I've been a spoiled brat on cassettes. I used to be very wealthy, no more! I clung to my past and my MA-XG's ad nauseum.... Sorry! I still think they're the best I've heard,,(I eagerly await the BlackWatch's) till I test them, the TDK's remain on top.
For some strange reason, the JVC F1/90's I got from Gary in TX sound quite good on the BX-300 with a little + on the bias *dunno* not good enough to put MFSL LP's on but, nice in the background on the Lux in the 'puter room!
Sooo, anyhoo, I'm only searching for the best of the best for now. I've got enough lower grades to last me awhile, I just want to say, sorry, if I've come off wrong.
Craig- still, and, always the stuwster

I don't think anybody will hold it against you if you don't like type I tapes, Stuwee. I happen to enjoy them in certain applications. In fact, I'm listening to an '82 Cure concert bootleg that I recorded from CD to a Akai SX, which, as you know, did NOT fair well at all in Des-Lab's recent test/review. But it sounds great regardless. Perhaps it doesn't hurt that there was already some hiss in this recording from the source tape, but I'm telling you, this is one of several recordings I've made with the Akai SX that have turned out very well.
A bit of a rant there. Anyway, I can't blame you for sticking with the higher bias cassettes, especially if you have a limited budget. I forgive you.

Good news on the health front.
On the tape front you need about 40 lashes with a wet noodle. Now what was your confession and apology about? :-?

That's GREAT news. Except that it means we can't blame your deviant NASCAR-behavior on that for awhile at least. :D
Truly...Type I tapes have their place in the tape world. But for good music reproduction, Type-II thru IV are the best.

I think it's safe to say that, because of our common hobby here, all of us are to some degree or another, mentally erratic. So you're forgiven. That's also news to me about your health issue. Glad that's all going well.
Type I's no doubt have a largely well earned stigma for being of mediocre quality. Probably because 90% of them are. But anyone who is willing to write that formula off completely obviously haven't tried the likes of Denon DX-4, Maxell XLI-S, or TDK AD-X.
-All of which are Type I's.
And all of which are superb tapes suitable for any high end appllication with outstanding results.

I might be craziest of all. I'm 16 and this is what I am doing in my spare time:
I am currently taping on 4 NOS Sony C-90HF's that are at least 15 years old (Gold wrapper), and they are a little hissy, but a very good tape for what I want them for:
Lo-Fi work mixes to be played loud in the theater where the sound system is VERY sterile. I am one of the best lighting guys, and we need me AND music, so now I can handle both at the same time...before I used to have CD's and iPods al haywire, so now I am doing 4 C-90's for now and more next week so I can have some great work music and now ahve to worry about what song to play next.
This one's all vinyl based (Except for Chumbawamba's Tubthumping), the next one will be somewhat digital.....Stu, please don't kill me.....*hope**whip*
So extra bass and warmth is very good. *reelspin*

Well, I just hope you arent sore at me for selling those TYPE I's to you. At least , as you wanted (at a very, very, small fortune), a hoard of tapes to mess with. Now I am kind of feeling bad about that.
Glad to hear your good news health wise. That's always a blessing.
Craig, if you are sour about our deal, I can refund you and you can still keep the tapes, you just let me know. I will do that for you.
Gary , in Texas.

Seriously, great to hear the good bill of health Craig. Also, at least you hung onto your fine equipment in this fiscal valley period - now for the rebound!!
David!! Great to have you back. Enjoy the humble HX's - they always were a bit hissier than the omnipresent UR and D from you know who. But they'll last....
As for type ones, it depends - they can be remarkable. I have a penchant for the good 'uns that Matt mentioned. The AD-X is rarer than rocking horse manure though. I get a lot of pleasure out of Maxell XLI-S, not surprisingly though. The SX-I from Maxell (circa 1992/3) was so good it made you wonder about the future of XLI-S (the non-S had already been withdrawn). Then, XLI-S was pulled too. Following that, the UD-I came out and that gave the same bright, fresh vitality of the SX-I in the new Spintech shell. The low-down is that it is, to my mind, a much better bet than the somewhat naff UDII of the same period. SX-I as I recall was pitted against the HX-S from Sony around that time in What Hi-Fi and they both got the thumbs up. I'll scan and post that when I locate it.
Other good type ones include Sony's rarely seen HF-ES (same vein as TDK AR-X) and of course the really gutsy sounding TDK AR. If you come across That's AS1 or CD-1F in the Suono format, you know what to do too. I promise to post a personal review of the Goldstar CD1 Pro in the next couple of days. Don't disregard the BASF Ferro-Maxima FMI either. In the unlikely contingency of seeing one, that is.
I use the AD from TDK which I will admit, although it clearly shows the standard D a clean pair of heels, needs proper calibration and tends towards a certain dryness, a grittiness perhaps. Not as smooth, or for that matter as quiet as Maxell UD1.
The last thing with type ones: some decks like them and others have richer tastes. That's not to say that the high-end type ones are cheap - they were pegged at the same or a bit more than good type IIs. Pioneer decks - the later ones from the nineties onwards, with full S-Auto BLE - they dine better on ferric than any other deck probably. Bear in mind running BLE defeats HX-Pro. They are so tuned to this task that using a pricer tape, especially if you use Dolby S, is almost rendered pointless. I was quite crestfallen when I got a brand new Pioneer CT-S640S - it sounds so good on Maxell UD1 that retuning it for XLII-S delivered a playback that was scarely better - perhaps only more dynamic, but hardly perceptable.
Well - that's my 2 cents worth from the listening room.

gamve, *hope* thoughts from AZ to Melbourne to your daughter. I've got a candle lit, I'm not Catholic, I just like the ritual and, infused with good thoughts anything can be beatin' down, my mother had a pillow made for me after the tumor was removed last Sept. *To Thine own Self be NICE* and

Gary, I love and am very happy with the tapes, no refund requested or needed. *Hi5* While it's easy to hide behind issues, health and otherwise, I'm not that kinda guy. I'm thankfull for being on the planet each and everyday, and for bein' able to have the opportunity to play with ya'll.
Peace,
Craig

Ding! Ding! Ding! Mike you're the first to notice!! We're opposites, I actually turn into you (shadow) when stressed or upset. And you turn into me *devil**eyepop* I took the big test many years ago, my grandmother and my mother and I were mirrors, within 2% + or - of each other, we always finish each others sentences and all that, attack the weak points because they're our own. My F (feeling) is almost off the scale. I'm working hard on that, *fit*,for others here on TH the mini test will be on a new thread soon. It's facinating really, based on the great Carl Jung's theory's of human behavior. I've been waiting for someone to notice obviously ;)
