David is excused for his lapse the last couple of weeks, no excuses for anyone else. Actually, I'm curious who isn't, as in who doesn't even have a TT, and why don't you, *whipslap* :D *Spin*

Last time I can definitely remember spinning a record was in 2000, just before my father finally dismantled his system.
I do not have a turntable. No real excuse or reason for it. It's just that as I built my system, I did it basically around tape and CD, bypassing vinyl completely.
Though I do WANT to get a turntable; my father has a lot of records that I'd love to spin. Maybe by the end of the year I'll have one. Just need to go look at some, decide on what I want, and then get it-along with the requisite accessories.
So not having one nor an excuse, do I dare ask what the penalty is?

I wanted to get back into vinyl last fall... not spinning a record since 1992. I picked up this Yamaha YP-D6 in good working and cosmetic condition:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2138/2122184324_a6a08c309a.jpg
Then got about 20 records. Played them for about a week but I probably haven't played one since I got more in March. Why? Clicks, pops and surface noise (even well cleaned good condition LP's). The fidelity is there but I can't shake hearing and anticipating stuff I hear that wasn't from the original recording. It's just a hang up I have. Sure I played records from 1968 until 1985 almost exclusively... but just compromised on the thought that it was the best choice I had. I think that's why I got back into cassettes as much as I have since April.

I have been listening to vinyl all my life. I've never stopped. I have over 4000 albums and my mom just said I could have my late father's collection(over a 1000 lp's and a ton of 45's). I go through phases where I'll listen to cd's more than lp's but lately I have been playing way more vinyl than cd's. I didn't actually buy a cd player until 1994. I had been borrowing one from my Dad for a couple years prior to 1994. I have since accumulated over 2000 cd's and over 1000 cdr's but I still dig vinyl.

I listen to vinyl on a daily basis, and use it as my main source to get stuff onto tape to listen to at work. My system is one that I've had since it was assembled in 1980 - Dual CS-714Q 'table, Akai GX-267D reel, Sansui AU-717/TU-217 system, and new is the huge variety of tape decks that can be picked up today for cheap!

I never was without a vinyl rig.
Vinyl is used here on daily basis.
I have beyond 5000 LP titles on the shelves.
I never was without R2R or Cassette.
Tapes, both cassette and R2R, are on daily basis too.
I have many thousands of titles on tape too.
CD has been here since launch.
CD is on daily basis.
I might have around 1000 CD's.
It is an unstabel storage format and the quality is not as good as analogue, but the user-friendlyness is appealing.
MD and DAT has been here since market launch.
Very rarely in use.
Low Q.
Few titles.
FM has alway been here.
FM is on daily basis.
Best broadcastings are still way beyond CD in quality.
Sometimes I record certain selected programmes onto tape or Hard Disc recorder.
PC connected to stereo has been here since 1995. Different PC's, though.
Very rarely used for music.
Digital sound has never been able to compete on quality with analogue sound.
I have, though, more than 10.000 songs in a variety of digital formats on the PC.
HardDisc based Digital Studio mixer and recorder in 24 bit / 96 khz has been here for 2-3 years.
Used at least on weekly basis.
Almost the quality of tape, or vinyl.
But it's a Hard Disc. No tiles on the shelves.
Machine is used to make CD's from other digital source or from FM, mediocre LP's, 78's or whatever.
But the CD's turn out better than any bought CD or PC produced CD I've ever heard.
78 rpm record player has been here for 2 years.
Only used on monthly basis.
I have had small problems with signal drop outs from cartridge here.
I will have to repair it.
I have around 200 titles on 78's.
DCC has never and will never be here.
8-track was never introduced in Denmark. Doubt it was ever in Europe. Wouldn't have it.
EL-Cassette was never consideret here.
Even though the quality of the EL-Cassette had potential, they never made any models competing in quality with the best normal cassette players.
TV and HiFi-VHS has always been connected to stereo.
HiFi-VHS is used on monthly basis.
DVD is connected to Stereo and has been for maybe 4 years.
DVD is used on daily basis, if not for music programmes, then for normal TV sound boosted up to a slightly higher level of quality.
I have around 100 concert films on DVD by now.
Fun to watch but it will never be good sound quality.
Digital set-top box is stereo connected and used on daily basis too.
In fact, my two mono power amplifiers are never turned off.
Neither is my RIAA or my PreAmp.
If my power amps were tube based or class A circuited, I would turn them off every night.

I use vinyl, CD and cassette 3-4 times a week (as work, other things permit). I quit using vinyl around 1992, and I got back 4-5 years ago. I practically never listen to FM, around omce a month if I find something interesting I tape it. Most of the radio programs are crap, regarding both quality and fidelity. I also have a portable MD and a deck, I use them to record live events 4-5 times a year. I simply don't like the sound of the MD (too digital), but for it is user friendly for live recordings. As niklasthedolphin mentioned DCC, 8-track and EL-Cassette have never been introduced here.

My vinyl rig sound quality surpasses everything else I've got by a large margin. I only bother with CD's when I don't have the LP. I've just got back into cassettes and I am now wondering why I ever stopped in the first place. I guess like most I was partly fooled by the digital lazy easy format. I am just glad I never got rid of my records. I'm now starting to look at R2R and will be posting some pretty basic questions, so bear with me please
cheers

S'all good, though I'll confess, I really want to hang out at Dolph's house. I'm afraid to calculate how many times the on/off switch has been used on my Thorens in the last 30 years, scary.

First and foremost vinyl, some 35+ years now with cassette coming a close second.
Records have been a constant during that period, I like so many things about the medium from the recording quality, album covers (anyone recall Hipgnosis or Pacific Eye And Ear ?) to the sheer pleasure of owning and listening to vinyl.
Will we ever see artists being afforded the time, or having the freedom to make statements like "Dark Side Of The Moon, Physical Grafitti, Sgt. Peppers" to name some obvious examples.
When Punk exploded here in the UK cassette really took off, friends were making and exchanging tape, lots of 7" singles, bootlegging and radio recording of the late John Peel - something healthy and quite democratic about it - home taping never killed music the suits saw to that.
Digital - thanks but I'll pass.

I collect jazz and dance band music from the 1920s, so I listen to 78s and LP reissues (and cassettes and CD reissues, too!) every day. The turntable I use is a KAB SL-BD 78.

Man, that's a ton of albums! It reminds me of the story I've heard about the d.j., Dr. Demento. He had so many records the floor of his house started to cave in.

If you spin just 3 records a day all year, it would take nearly 55 years to listen them all. Just once. I think it reads 6000.

I use vinyl almost daily, definitely weekly at a minimum.
Current tables: Technics SL-Q200, Sl-D303, SL-Q2; Garrard Zero z200b, junk Toshiba and I'm looking to save for the budget Pro-Ject TT. I love the euphoric experience that is vinyl. And taping vinyl is blissful to me.

I'm a big fan of vinyl. Use CD's when I get lazy. Just put some new feet on this Micro Seiki TT. I've had it for about a year and haven't hooked it up yet. It has the 707 arm.

No, it's a Micro Seiki MA-707 arm. Some thought it was the same as their carbon fiber (not). Found this table at a yard sale that was advertised as "Buy My Roommates Stuff." There was a small photo of the TT but the ad was almost a turn off. Turns out the roommate was moving overseas and was at the sale. I asked how much and was told $25. No lid, no Sorbothane feet, broken AT stylus, said I would think about it. Went and picked up some boxes of records and tapes. When I dropped them off I took a look at e$ay. No DQ-3 TT but the arm had just sold for nearly $400*eyepop*! Back I went. Good thing it was such a crappy ad. I have several cartridges but I just picked up a Sony XL33L that I may mount.
Unbelievably, I have a Thorens 125 MKII with SME 3009 II and new Shure V15 III (seller thought it was an AT) that I picked up for the same price from the original owner. It came in the box with all manuals. In the box for the lid I found another Shure V15 III and a spare stylus—in boxes.

Have had vinyl playback in one form or another since about '73 and on a continuous basis.
Current turntable is an early Thorens TD-125 MKI which I have completely overhauled. (Rebuilt all of the electronics too) The arm is an SME3009 Series II with detachable headshell and my cartridge is a Grado Platinum Reference which is very nice, perhaps a smidge too laid back sounding. Phono pre is of my own design uses one D3A, 5842, and 5687 per channel with the psu on a separate chassis. I go through phases and am not playing that much vinyl at the moment, this week-end I will entertain an audiophile and vinyl will get played.
I've been playing CD's since 1983, and initially found it hard to believe that such a bad sounding format could replace vinyl. Many mods later on that early Philips/Magnavox machine and I had some ability and desire to listen to at least an entire CD without chucking the machine and disk out the nearest window. More recently a PS Audio Lambda Drive and Ultralink II formed the primary source in my system for years until they started to wear out.
My primary source at the moment is a homebrew CD transport and DAC built over last winter and spring. Really surprisingly good, so much so that I use it nearly every day.
I also play SACDs and use a heavily modified Sony SCD-777ES (slightly feature reduced version of the SCD-1) This arguably on very well recorded material is my best sounding source.
Tape - just getting into open reel tape, and I have a slightly battle scarred, but well maintained, fully functional Otari MX-55-T-M and a slightly problematic ReVox G36 MKIII that I am in the process of restoring/modifying.
I also have a Mitsubishi DA-F10 tuner which receives the least use, but sounds quite good on decent broadcasts.. (WGBH, WCRB and WERS in Boston) New lights, recapped and a three wire line cord fitted.
The rest of the system is entirely home brew and consists of the aforementioned two chassis phono pre, the line stage which uses transformer coupled outputs and 26 direct heated triodes, a two chassis 300B SE power amplifier, and a pair of Onken bass cabinets with Iconic woofers, and JBL mid horns (4333) and annular ring (2402) horn tweeters. I've been through several x-o redesigns, but I think I finally got it right.. LOL
Tape is my new thing and I hope to do some live recording in the future and be able to listen to that..

I usually have two or three records of my huge collection of 9 albums that I put on and play at night. Its neat because it shuts off automatically where most of my 8 tracks wouldn't. Besides that a skipping record will wake you up and 8 track coming off the cart won't. Most of my turntables are the inexspensive older 8T / TT / Casette / AM / FM combo units, not anything neat like some I've seen in other members pictures. Maybe some day. !sigh!

I'm not sure who made what first, Grace or Micro Seiki? They're both very similar. And very nice, that's why I freaked out when I saw it! $25?? Bastid! *eyepop*:D:D I thought I spyed the Thorens just like mine in your pics somewhere, my arm is the Shure version though they are the exact same thing:

Woops, I missed this post. Yes, my hand is up, I listen to records every day, except on what I call "bad days." :)
It's my favorite format, my system is built around it, and l love all the blood, sweat, tears, and money (lots of money) that goes into getting it right.
Actually right now I'm listening to the 200g audiophile repress of Duke Ellington's Piano in the Foreground. My main rig is a Pro-Ject RM-5 with Dynavector 10X5 cartridge, and a Wright 200C tube phono preamp.
I'm also trying to calm myself down because I just realized I've run out of new .5 mil outer sleeves, but the new records keep arriving in the mail!!!*yikes*

Like the Grace 707 do ya Craig. Nice arm have one of those suckers on my Thorens 150 mated with an Audio Technia AC09 very sweet. Nice arm for the suspended type tables cause it's light and does not bugger up the suspension too much. Mid range to die for, but I find the suspended type tables lack bass drive and definition
